It is more like a visit to the historical orison where Mandela and Gandhi were stationed during Apartheid. The outlook appearance of the prison which is restored looks like a fort hence the name. Ticket can be bought at the Constitution Hill where the city sightseeing bus halts for a change to the blue line.

Tourists interested to know a piece of history must visit as well hire the guide as well to know more in detail.

Just did an amazing tour of Johannesburg with Mark Petzer. Great guide - informative, knowledgeable and easy to be with. If you want insight into the history and activity of this city I highly recommend Mark.

We weren't allowed to see the fort without buying tickets for the concert happening next door. No where was there official information about where to buy genuine tickets or for how much, only plenty of security guards trying to get us to buy tickets off their friends.
Some even claimed not to know there even was a fort, but still insisted we could get tickets off their friends... this did not seem right to us!
The other historic buildings visible without entering the complex are much newer, quite run down & not in anyway connected to the original fort, only its time as a prison. All the available history presented was also about recent history only, starting with apartheid.
There was also someone smoking weed & others sleeping on the pavements.

Not recommended!

You will have to buy a ticket down at the Visitors Center near the Constitutional Court. This will allow you to go to the inside of the Johannesburg Fort as well as the Men's Prison and the Women's Prison. In the fort look out for a Mandela Exhibition called "the Sands of Time" - it is very interesting with diaries and letters of the great man while he was in prison. Look at the awesome mosaic in the main exercise yard of Johannesburg from the sky. Spend time looking through some of the old buildings - some of the oldest in Johannesburg.
