Our South African friend brought us here on the day of our arrival to Joburg and it was- I have to say -the best introduction to the local and SA national history. The Johannesburg Fort is part of the complex called Constitution Hill. The structure is one of the oldest in Johannesburg. It was build in 1893 by Paul Kruger during the Anglo Boer War..
The tours are guided. After buying the tickets we were directed to watch the introductory movie followed by the actual interesting tour. The guide described the challenges and humiliations of prisoners' daily lives and we visited the original cells and facilities. One of the highlights of the visit was an opportunity to see the museum of Mandela and Gandhi, two probably most prominent prisoners of Johannesburg Fort. Mandela was the only black prisoner in this all-whites section of prison. Our guide was knowledgeable and accommodating and made this visit educational and meaningful. From the Johannesburg Fort we proceeded to Constitutional Court.
Johannesburg Fort hosts a very nice restaurant serving simple good food - The Hill Cafe.

If you are visiting the Constitution Hill, yu have to see also the Fort.
The Fort was built in 1893, iand it s one of the oldest buildings in Joburg.
It was used as a fortress by Paul Kruger during the Anglo Boer War.I recommend the visit if you are close to this "full of history area" of Joburg.

This site was ok. It's part of a old prison site and part of Constitutional Hill. As of matter of fact you both Constitutional Hill, the old women jail, and Johannesburg Fort is one.

another visit which caused me some distress - how can we have allowed such cruelty to be inflicted onto the native south Africans? Very thought provoking.
