Although there seems to be a need for some TLC on a general level with regard to maintenance and upkeep, the zoo is still a fun place to go, especially for the kids. There are lots of things to see and you will all get a good workout in walking the premises. For parents ;-) this one will really excite & tire out your kids in enjoying a fun filled day with an early night for you to enjoy in silence...

Johannesburg Zoo, is just what it says....plenty of animals, and people on a week-end, so it is best to try and go there during the week. The surroundings in the park is well kept, and all the animals seems to be happy to be there.

The Johannesburg Zoo is one of the best and inexpensive attraction in the city. See the Big5 or walk with the elephants. See animals being fed. There are pony rides for the kids. Everyone loves the wide variety of animals and reptiles on display. Pack a picnic basket and enjoy a leisurely lunch with the family. If you are tired of walking hire buggy and ride around in it. They even have evening viewing on some occasions. Check dates for this. A restaurant is available.

I had an enjoyable morning with my little niece. She was amazed by everything. As an adult, I felt a bit sad that there was clearly a lack of funds to maintain the zoo how it should be. But still a good day. The giraffes are always beautiful too.

With a heatwave warning in effect over Johannesburg – we expected that most of Johannesburg would take refuge in air-conditioned malls and we were right. In some areas of the zoo we were the only wanderers. The main game area is currently undergoing renovation; so are some of the habitats and displays, but even with these inconveniences we still had a great day. The shaded walkways were a pleasure and the newer displays great. A highlight was the “Animals from the Amazon” housed in a Mayan inspired building. This shaded interior space was a welcome escape from the midday sun. Other highlights include the lemurs, lions and birds. It was a great day and I am happy to see the ongoing developments at Johannesburg Zoo. Just a warning – basic snack and drinks inside the zoo are very expensive and although the facilities are good this is still a public space. Take the family and go have a great day!
