I only had a few hours free after a business meeting and wanted to discover a bit of Jo'burg . City sightseeing was the best option as it allows you to go quickly (and safely!) around the most important things to be seen, including stops at the Carlton tower, Apartheid museum, origins museum etc. even offers an additional option for those with more time to visit Soweto,,, great service especially in this place where wandering around on your own could turn out as as a misadventure...

Thank R S

The bus tour takes you to all important places in Joburg and it's a good way to see the city if you don't own a car.

If you do the Soweto tour, I suggest you do it during the week. The tour guides are really good but the problem is that if there are too many people, they will organise two small vans and if you're lucky, the tour guide sits in the same van with you. Our guide sat during the whole tour in Soweto in the other van and although the driver gave us some information on the sites, it was hard to hear him if sitting in the back (and it's not the same as with a guide).
We had a short break in front of the Hector Pieterson museum where a volunteer guide told us about the Apartheid era and the history of Soweto. He was very professional and I totally support the idea of having a volunteer guide doing the introduction and was more than happy to give money to him. However, I wonder if the tour company shouldn't be supporting the volunteers; the description states that you have a tour guide-so why do you pay extra for the tour? Also, we were in a hurry all the time because the driver had to be back to get another group after us. The tour description gives you the impression that there's time to look around, eat and drink-but this is only the case if you hop off and wait for another bus. However, the guides told us the other vans were full so basically, hopping off we would have had to wait for the last van that picks up all the last remaining people.
The tour was very good but these small things made it very hectic and I felt like I only saw Soweto from the window. I recommend the organisers to organise more guides and buses for busy weekends so that everyone can get the most of it! I can imagine the experience to be very different when it's not so busy.

Thank you for your review. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed the bus portion of our tour.
As regards the Soweto portion, last Saturday was an accumulation of extra-ordinary circumstances. An exceptional amount of visitors wanting to explore Soweto together with the launch of the Soweto extension of “I am a GeePee” campaign ended up being beyond the immediate capability of this young entrepreneurial business. Saturday was a steep learning curve for us in regard the Soweto option and I can assure you that measures have already been put in place to prevent a repeat of this. Please accept our apologies for not meeting your expectation on this particular day

This company does a fantastic job. Lots of people to help you should you need it. Save some money and buy online. You get an email with a bar code and show it to the desk clerk or bus driver. Just take care to plan your time if you are are stopping at sites pay attention to their closing times. Some are earlier on weekends.

We have used these bus offerings around the world but this one rates the best yet. We first used this Red Bus in August 2013 when it had apparently just launched with a so-so tour experience. This time, both days were totally positive with friendly and knowledgeable guide assistants on duty to help with ticketing, sightseeing [e.g. Top of Africa] and queries. The buses also kept close to the posted schedules. The online booking also worked very well. The audio commentary was excellent and I highly recommend this vehicle [pardon the pun] as the best way to learn about this marvellous city in transition.
