It's worth going to Johannesburg specifically to visit this museum. It's a fascinating place very well curated. It's disturbing in many places as you absorb the complex history of South Africa. The section on the UN is very good.

Heart rendering. At times reduced to tears. Puts things like the toyi toyi, mass protests and the singing into perspective.

It's what kept the oppressed population going during the dark days of Apartheid.

Lowlight: Speech of Hendrik Verwoed. On the same psychotic level of Hitler in my opinion.

If you have limited time in the city and like to know where you are standing, then go to this museum. It's totally worth the visit. The exhibits are well presented and the amount of information and detail is astonishing. Plus, now they have the special exhibit on Nelson Mandela.

Great place to learn about South Africa’s history. And it’s right next to the gold reef city theme park!
