This little area within the heart of JHB is perfect for all nature lovers and outdoor seekers. Can climb and hike through the trails of Melville mountains (mini) to get to the top for an incredible view of the city. One of my fav things to do :)

Very nice tour on a sunday afternoon with well-informed guides who can teach you a lot about the history of the Koppies, the flora and fauna, and a lot more with a good sense of humour. Also to mention the amazing view over all of Joburg. Do a Tour, you won´t regret it!

I arranged a walk to coincide with a convention. We had 31 walkers and Wendy and David Carstens were our guides. They were professional and fun and provided a comprehensive history of the area and interesting detail on the flora and fauna along our way. Even discussing the medicinal properties of some of the plants. The walk and the information provided appealed to both men and women and was thoroughly enjoyed by the group who were pleasantly surprised that such a beautiful area with rich history is on our doorstep.

We went with a club and two things stood out. Firstly, the hike was so quick we never got to appreciate the beauty that Melville Koppies adequately provides. There is a lot of history there but I think our team leader had other places to be because he reluctantly allowed us to stop for mere seconds. Or perhaps he was concerned about our safety. Secondly, As a nature reserve I was surprised and dismayed to find that along our route, there were groups having their religious meetings, which in itself is not bad, but the mess and trash they left, was. Some of our group felt that this put strain on the feeling of being safe. There were signs at a lot of sites where people had been cooking and eating, they had just left all the remnants. This really did detract from the natural beauty that the Koppies do offer in abundance.
A suggested tip. Research who you go with as the speed of the hike will determine the fitness you need. A slow amble is fine for a beginner with low fitness but doing it at the speed of light, I found requires super fitness.

We were looking for something to do outdoors and came across Melville Koppies.

We joined a Sunday afternoon guided tour, through Melville Koppies Central.
Our group was led by Don who gave a great tour.
The walk was easy, stopping times for an explanation on the fauna, flora and history.

We can highly recommend this park if you feel a like leisurely outdoor activity in Jozi.
The walk is relaxing and has great views of Johannesburg.
