Beautiful modern/retro hotel decor in a gorgeous, upscale and safe area of Johannesburg. The prices were very reasonable coming from the US, the food was excellent and I was so impressed by the staff. The service was very friendly and accommodating. Thanks for the great stay!
The Fire & Ice is situated in Melrose Arch, Melrose, about 4kms/2.5 miles from Sandton City, the business centre in Johanesburg.
The hotel is a 4 star hotel, however is really a great entertainment venue.
From the pool and bar area where they sell stunning ferro rocher / Lindt / bar one etc milk shakes, to great food.
It is as a result noisy-ish,but great.
Waited hours for the rooms to be ready for check in whilst on a conference. Limited seating in the waiting area. Poor planning, limited staff. Once we had checked in, room was neat. A very tiring night.
The room is perfectly fine. We slept wonderfully in our king size bed. The aircon, hot water, wifi, TV, all worked flawlessly.
Where things fell apart was on the service levels. Our room wasn't serviced on one out of two nights, despite repeat requests at the reception, and the promise that this would be addressed right-away. For some bizarre reason there's one tiny tube of shower gel that's meant for two adults. Good luck extracting a second tube from the hotel. We requested one at said reception, and were told it would be send up immediately (it never came, there's a pattern of no service delivery).
Last but not least, there's an urn in the room instead of a coffee maker, so you'll have to make-do with Nescafe. South African hotels might be the last places on earth thinking that this is appropriate.
In short, given other Marriott hotels in Melrose Arch, pay a bit more, stay at the Africa Pride, you won't regret it. Give this a miss. It seems it's mostly a layover place for airline crew and it's run as such. Basic.
3 of us came here on a work trip, and all of us said the same. Broken toilet - The fix was it dripping all night - Lack of towels in the room, pretty poor breakfast, rooms are really badly laid out with a shower in the room. The service at the bar is absolutely dreadful. The staff couldn't be less interested in serving you. When I checked out and was asked (half heartedly) how was your stay....I expressed how poor it was. "The manager will contact you and, yes I will email you the bill".....I am still waiting for both. Very Very Poor....! I am surprised Emirates Staff stay there - maybe they experience better service.
