an interesting but slightly noisy room

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 04 Sept 2019
The room was large - which was appreciated after a long drive. The weekend manager didn't seem to have much information about local tourist attractions, but the regular manager (owner?) made up for it the next morning.

We stayed in Aragon. If a different room is available I suggest taking it. Aragon is right next to the breakfast area and quite close to the reception. As a result there is little hope of sleeping in. Also, there are random small steps throughout the room to watch for.

My husband and daughter enjoyed the Tolkien art. He read The Hobbit to her when she was about 6 but she doesn't remember most of the story and hasn't read Lord of the Rings yet. As they went around visiting the various pictures he told her a summary of the part of the story it was from.

Let's start with the positives, beautiful gardens, a real haven of peace and beauty. Staff are lovely, very welcoming. Rooms are very spacious, bathroom was huge. Lots of very secure parking.
Now the niggles, our room ( arwin) was incredibly dark, its Windows look out onto a wall. There was an issue with exposed wires on the bedside lamp, could be dangerous although I did let the lovely lady on reception know so I expect it's been sorted but housekeeping should have picked up on that .
Breakfast was lovely although neither of us actually got what we ordered , nevertheless it was very tasty .
The bathroom, although massive, was a bit dated , I know it's a period property but it could do with a spruce up although the rainfall shower head was fab. Overall the room just felt a bit gloomy.
The advertised bar consisted of two beers and some soft drinks, no spirits at all.
Despite this, overall I enjoyed my stay here and would stay again but I would not want the same room, looking through some of the other open doors, other rooms looked lovely and bright.

Hobbit Hotel was really a nice place to stay the rooms were very clean, comfortable and spacious and its unique features.
The swimming pool was very nice and clean e I stayed there for a couple of days at the birthplace of the JJR Tolkien. The breakfast was very nice and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
This was really a good experience thank you very much to the Hobbit family!

As lifelong fans of all things JRR, we decided to treat ourselves to a night in this hotel during our tour of South Africa. We were checked in by a less than welcoming reception and shown to our room - one of the new ones. The hotel is clearly undergoing refurbishment in some areas, but there were no notices to this effect. The room was spacious, but curiously furnished - a large comfortable bed, a dressing table and one stool, an empty chest (not chest of drawers) and a wardrobe with one hanger in it. We had to ask for wifi code, and information about restaurants nearby - no restaurant or bar in the hotel. The website mentions a library, but it is intact a small bookcase with a collection of books that previous guests have left, plus some Readers Digest 'edited editions' and a collection of romantic novels from last century. Nothing relating to JRR himself. There are a couple of pictures and the rooms are named after Tolkien characters, but otherwise there is nothing to link this to the great man. It strikes me that the hotel is riding on the back of the name, with no intention of making the guests' experience a themed visit. Overall very disappointing.

Room tip: go somewhere else

It appears the hotel is undergoing extensive refurbishment so it may be better when that is complete.

Room, Thorin, was basic but satisfactory. Unfortunately, there was a smell of fresh putty which may have been coming from the refurbishment. It was quite strong the second morning. A very complex new air/conditioner and heater unit with complex controls with many obscure icons and no instructions on how to use it was therefore useless. Also, located directly over the bed so if had needed at night would have been very noisy. Room lacked a waste bin, shaver socket in bathroom, and had not been cleaned properly (found an empty beer can in a cupboard).

Secure parking. Breakfast was basic but with a vey good and fluffy omelette. Front staff were unhelpful when asked for restaurant recommendations.

Returned early in afternoon planning to use the pool but that was impractical due to the noise of the building works.

Room tip: Avoid Thorin unless they fix the smell

We recently stayed for 1 night at this hotel after reading the reviews. We booked online, only to arrive to be told that they haven't checked their emails. With all rooms apparently full, we were given a spare room, not at all what we booked. The room was small, the dustbin still had the previous occupants left overs in and the bathroom not at all up to standard. Reception seemed uninterested and not qualified. Breakfast was good with friendly service. We cannot recommend this hotel if you need a good night's sleep.
