It's so nice - you'll visit twice. That's exactly what a friend and I did on a roadtrip to this part of the country. We were awestruck by the green nature around us, the winding roads up the mountains and most of all - THOSE STUNNING VIEWS! This is good to visit on a cloudy day too - we got immersed in the mist atop the glorious mountains.

Our camp site had sufficient ablution facilities, super clean and spacious. The camping grounds are luscious green, clean, shaded, very well maintained and safe. There is a convenience shop just across the road. More braai facilities (for wood or charcoal barbecue) needed. The few ones there are sufficient and clean with braai grids. The view on the mountains behind the camping grounds are spectacular - especially during sunset.

We visited the park twice, once to do the game drives and once to hike. The entry fee for 2 adults and one child was 440R, which is expensive compared to other SA parks. There are several hikes ranging from 45 mins to 2 days and you can combine some of the shorter ones.

One passes through The Golden Gate Highlands National Park en route to Harrismith from Clarens. I would recommend that you take a day to explore this beautiful National Park whether it be from Harrismith or the Clarens side.. There are two or three scenic routes that one can take off the main road. These roads consist of single lane tar strip roads that meander high up in to the mountains and have some extremely beautiful view sites along the way. Be patient, travel slowly and be prepared for breathtaking views and sightings. There are horses wandering around and the story is that they were left behind by a Spanish Circus when they left South Africa in the 1930's. There are Eagles and Vultures to be seen. For those adventurous enough to traverse the two strip cement track you can get to the "Vulture's Restaurant". A Secretary Bird was spotted on one of the routes as were a number of Buck and Wildebeest (or Gnu's). Do not let the opportunity to see these magnificent views pass you by.
