This hotel was the jewel in our three week travels in South Africa. The greeting was warm and friendly, nothing is too much trouble for reception. The decor is perfection. The situation right over the Ocean is glorious. We had a superb suite with wonderful views. It was immaculate! Not a smudge on the paint, upholstery as new, sparkling big bathroom, crisp bed linen and fluffy towels and robes. We had a flat tyre on our hire car when we arrived but the staff changed it in no time and arranged a replacement car even though it wasn’t hired through them! Wonderful! Will be back soon.

The Plettenberg Hotel is lovely.
However, my husband and I booked two nights here as our 'treat' to ourselves at the end of two weeks touring in South Africa. We had been in Plettenberg Bay many years ago - but with four children - and we promised ourselves that we would come back later and stay in this hotel.
When we arrived we were told by the manager that the hotel was full and our room had been 'double booked'! He said that this was something that 'never happens' and said that 'if I have to get on a plane myself and fly to Cape Town and ask our booking agents how this has been allowed to occur, then I promise you I will do this'!
He said that he had taken the decision to book us into a another local hotel - the Old Rectory - and that we would find this delightful.
To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. But with no room, we felt we had no option but to go to the Old Rectory.
Initially the manager said that 'of course, we will deduct the price of this hotel from the cost of a room here'. this was totally unacceptable as none of this was our fault.
We said that he would have to deduct the entire cost of the Old Rectory from our bill!
He dealt with this very badly.
He also said that our room would be ready between 11.00 and 11.30 am the next morning as the guests were leaving at 10.00am.
The Old Rectory was ok ish, but not a hotel we would have chosen and by no means comparable to the Plettenberg Bay Hotel.
We arrived at the Plettenberg Bay Hotel at 11.30 the next morning and, guess what, our room wasn't ready. The guests - as was their right - had vacated at 11.00 am. The manager - again - apologised - and said that he had put 'my entire housekeeping team' into the room to get it ready for us.
We were shown to the garden room and offered a glass of champagne each.
We declined as we were well past wanting to 'toast' each other at this stage!!
As we were waiting here we recognised another couple from breakfast at the Old Rectory. They confirmed that they, too, had been due to be at this hotel the previous night but that their room had been over booked. They also said that another couple - honeymooners - had been treated in the same way.
So much for the manager saying that 'this never happens at our hotel'. "Economical with the truth' or what?
Now I am very willing to accept that double bookings do occur but the manager was less than honest with us in everything he said. So what was supposed to be our treat at the end of a fantastic holiday resulted in us spending less than 24 hours in our room.
Whilst I appreciate that the above is a very trivial 'first world' complaint, but we were not being charge third world prices!
This is a lovely hotel and the views are stunning.
However, the manager dealt with this very badly and whilst he did pay for our night at the Old Rectory, we felt that he never appreciated just how much his inability to be honest with us spoiled the last couple of days of our holiday.

Dear Sadie C,

Thank you for taking the time to write this review and I appreciate the positive comments that you made with regards to the hotel and your stay with us.

I sincerely apologise for the overbooking that occurred on this particular day. I acknowledge and take full responsibility for the mistake that was made with these reservations as this resulted in us having to relocate more than one guest to another five-star hotel for that particular evening.
I can assure you that this is absolutely not the norm for this hotel. We have policies and procedures in place which prevents this happening and it is standard practice that we do not overbook the hotel. In this particular instance, we did make a mistake and we will do our utmost to ensure that this does not ever happen again.

I would also like to apologize for the way in which you felt I dealt with this situation, especially as this had a direct negative impact not only your stay with us but on the whole tail end of your trip in South Africa.
This was a very difficult situation for us as a hotel to be in as we hold our guests in such high regard and value the fact that of all the hotels in the area, you specifically selected us, and we were not able to accommodate you.

I did the very best that I could, and I understand that nothing would have made the situation any better.

I do hope that you one day allow us the opportunity to show you what a true Plettenberg experience is all about.

Kind regards,

MJ, Wiida and the Team

Wonderful attentive staff and fantastic views. Nothing was too much to ask of The Staff. Thank you for making our stay memorable.

Slightly ageing property therefore, you hear lots of rattling doors and sash windows. Recommend take some earplugs to get a better sleep.

The property is of a bygone era which is a real postive.

This property has one of the most gorgeous locations with the most stunning views onto lookout beach or the Robberg Peninsula depending on where your room is situated. The hotel is also perfectly situated to access the beach and also even walk to the town center.

I would recommend to ask for a sea view room as that just adds to your experience. Although all the public areas have amazing sea views if you do not get a sea view room. The rooms are tastefully decorated and have all the 5 star amenities one would expect from a 5 star boutique hotel.

The restaurant at the hotel has an amazing selection and some of the best cuisine on offer in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view suite
