The hotel is a bit out of town but has lovely views over the ocean - if you want a sea view you have to specifically book one. We were in the main hotel which was pretty empty when we stayed but the room was large and comfortable. You can easily walk to the town and although people say be careful we saw no problems. We were warned not to take the beach path next to the hotel as someone had been robbed.
Breakfast is supposed to be a buffet and cooked but as there were few guests the first day the buffet was a selection of items served to the table. The second day more people had arrived and a buffet was on offer.
The staff at reception are great and helpful. The staff in the restaurant were a bit lacking at dinner. The menu is very limited but that may be due to the lack of guests.

Dear ColchesterSleeper,

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us.

We are glad to read that you enjoyed your stay with us. As you mentioned the location of the hotel is ideal in that it is situated within easy access from Main Road with all its shops and restaurants while still being distant enough to provide peace and quiet to guests staying at the hotel. Our views over the ocean and distant mountains peaks are simply spectacular and having breakfast on our patio with this to gaze out on is an experience one must have.

Not all rooms are sea facing as you correctly noted but we have taken care to ensure that all our rooms are finished to a standard that will provide our guests with a comfortable and luxurious stay while with us.

We do advice guests not to use the nature trail leading down to the rocks as it is densely bushed with no clearly marked trails and no line of sight. The trail directly to the left leading down to Lookout Beach is much easier to navigate and will deposit you directly on the beach within 5 minutes.

Breakfast consists of both a continental offer as well as a cooked breakfast served to order. With fewer guests inhouse we would occasionally do individual stands for each table as an alternative option to a buffet set up with the menu for cooked breakfast available as per normal.

Our staff is and remains our most important asset and we are fortunate to have a dedicated and hard-working team who strives to provide the best guest experience possible to our visitors.

We look forward to welcoming you back in future.

Kind regards,
MJ, Wiida and The Team

I was invited to "high tea" at the hotel so I was excited to go...my first time to the place! I looked it up online and their description of High Tea was outstanding so I was expecting much more than two tiny scones with some sides...nothing like what is on their site. Even if I had not looked online, I've been to High Teas all over the world and this didn't come close to any I've been to. We were the only ones there...everybody else in the "area" were sitting around by the pool getting burned by the sun (bright red skin). The lobby of the hotel looked beautiful with gorgeous details (beautiful lamps, grand mirrors surrounded by beach glass) and items in the glass case like nothing I've seen around...all those things were beautiful. Will go back another time and have a meal...give it a second chance!

Dear Wendy H,

Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to SeaFood at The Plettenberg.

We are sorry that we did not live up to your expectations of High Tea as you know it. Our High Tea as you saw advertised on our website is not something that is offered as a standard every day but is available with 24 hours pre-booking. We do serve afternoon tea in the form of scones and accompanying condiments that are available every day without pre-booking.

Next time that you visit Plettenberg Bay please do book High Tea with us, we would love to have the opportunity to impress you away with our version of High Tea.

Kind regards,
MJ, Wiida and The Team

We stayed there for two nights during our honeymoon. The Plettenberg Hotel has a fantastic view over Plettenberg Bay. Unfortunately, we did not receive a room with a view. But we enjoyed it during breakfast and for drinks. Even the hotel cat Peter enjoyed our friendship. The staff is friendly but not very professional and educated. Furthermore, when we left the hotel, there were several people standing at the door and saying good-bye, which was nice but we could feel, that they were just "waiting" for tips.

Dear travelmood45,

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us.

We are indeed fortunate to be located in such an ideal position, overlooking the Indian Ocean in all its magnificence. The views are particularly spectacular at sunrise and sunset, so enjoying breakfast in the morning or cocktails during early evening on the terrace lends itself to an amazing experience.

We’re sad to read that your overall experience of our team was so lacking. We would love to have you stay with us again in future so that we can have the opportunity to rectify your impression.

Our staff at The Plettenberg forms the heart of the hotel and each and every one of them strives every day to ensure the highest level of service are given to our guests. Our team pride themselves on taking the best possible care of our guests during their stay with us, up to and including waving them goodbye as they drive away while wishing them safe travels ahead.

We look forward to welcoming you back to The Plettenberg in future.

Kind regards,

MJ, Wiida and The Team

It’s difficult to review this place. To be honest it doesn’t feel very hotel like. It might be that our room was in the annexed building but for me it felt like the hotel has no heart.

That said Service was great, staff lovely and food fantastic (note vegetarian menu which was really welcome)

It’s a shame that the hotel itself is a little isolated and personally I agree with the comment ‘security is both reassuring and unsettling at the same time’. We were advised not to follow the nature trial outside the hotel or go into the town due to previous attacks on tourists in the area. This was the first place I felt unsafe.

Top tip, if given the choice between a luxury room or a view, opt for the view. Our room was huge, separate living room and massive bathroom. It looked out on a shared varanda and onto a wall. The vista of the coast is truly breathtaking and I think I would have personally preferred that.

Thanks to Cathy for the tour ideas and Thulani for the fantastic service throughout

Dear gster1977,

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us.

The part of the hotel that you stayed in during your visit with us was built to take advantage of the incredible ocean views while providing a little more privacy to guests wishing to relax with only the sound of the waves and seagulls disturbing them.

We’re sorry to read that you found it too quiet for your taste and would love to have you visit us again, next time maybe staying in the main building.

We have a great team of chefs in our kitchen and they enjoy nothing more than producing excellent food for all our visitors, hence our lovely vegetarian options. Our rooms are decorated to provide luxurious comfort to all our guests.

We take our guests’ welfare and safety very seriously, thus the advice not to use the nature trail as it is densely bushed with no clear trails marked down to the bottom and very limited line of sight. The trail directly to the left leading down to Lookout Beach is much easier to navigate and will lead you directly to the beach within 5 minutes.

We are situated 400m from the Main Road and all its accompanying hustle and bustle and guests are welcome to explore the area on foot. As is common when travelling our guests are advised not to walk alone at night in unfamiliar surroundings.

It was lovely having you stay with us and we look forward to welcoming you back in future.

Kind regards,

MJ, Wiida and The Team

My husband and I had the absolute pleasure to return to The Plettenberg Hotel on Saturday, 23 September – 27 September 2017 to celebrate our Anniversary. We were warmly welcomed at reception and had complimentary coffee and cappuccino at the deck by the pool. We enjoyed a delightful light lunch before our check-in which was the perfect start to our blissful stay.

Wiida the manager personally took us to our suite and made us feel right at home. Our Premier Suite (nr 57) was located in the Annex building across the street from the main building and boasted magnificent sea views. Our suite was very spacious and luxuriously furnished and decorated. Our suite also boasted a balcony. The linen on the bed was also luxurious and the bed ensured a dreamy night's rest. We received a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine to celebrate our Anniversary.

I arrange beforehand with reception to have dinner on our first night in the wine cellar. Everything was carefully prepared for us complete with candles. Apart from the exquisite meal we had a very special, romantic and memorable evening (see my review on SeaFood restaurant). We had a romantic turn-down in our room with complimentary petit fours as another special treat.

Breakfast was a real feast with a wide spread cold buffet and a hot selection. The views from the Conservatory were spectacular.

We enjoyed the rest of our dinners in the comfort of our suite which was very romantic. We had cocktails and a light lunch at Sandbar. The Mojito cocktails are their signature cocktail and sipping on mine I did not wonder why – it was beyond excellent.

Not a day went by that we did not see Whales and dolphins from our suite or from the infinity pool downstairs where tables and chairs are provided to soak in the magnificent views.

The Collection Boutique in the main building is stocked with high quality clothing, jewelry, handbags and scarves to name a few. The shop assistant is a lovely lady with a great sense of humour whom assisted me with heartfelt kindness.

From the moment we entered the hotel we were treated like royalty by each and every staff member. We would like to make a special mention of Baloyi, Michael, Ace and Honest (Sandbar). We were greeted by surname at breakfast and throughout the day whenever they saw us. Their true and heartfelt hospitality made our stay extra special.

We would also like to thank Wiida and the General Manager MJ for taking special care of us throughout our stay. On the morning of our departure MJ met us to say our final goodbyes and even walked us to our rental car – a small gesture we truly appreciated.
The Plettenberg hotel is in our opinion a grand and luxurious old dame and provides the perfect environment to relax and unwind in pure luxury.

We are already planning our next trip to the Plettenberg hotel next year.

Room Tip: Suite 57 was very private and spacious

Having lunch on our outside terrace is a most excellent way to commence your stay with us as this area boasts exceptional views which are often enhanced by the sight of wales and dolphins making their way along the coast. Ensuring our guests feel at home from the moment they step through our doors is a priority for every staff member and we’re happy so see that we succeeded so well.

It was a pleasure having you stay with us and we look forward to welcoming you back next year.
