I'm not quite sure what to say about this property. Our initial feeling was one of disappointment. It markets itself as a 5 star beach resort and so we expected sea views from our room and all the public areas. In fact, our room was over the road from the beach, behind another villa and the only view from our balcony was green foliage. Only four 2 seater tables on the decking and one 2 seater table in the restaurant had full sea views. There were no towels in our room, the door lock didn't work and had to be replaced.
The next day we felt more positive about the place. Our room was spacious and VERY quiet (so we had a good night's sleep) and the breakfast was excellent. All the staff were very friendly and courteous.
However, there were no seat pads/cushions on the chairs and no mattresses on the sun loungers. So there was nowhere to sit/lie comfortably during the day.
So, in summary, we had a comfortable stay but is definitely not 5 stars

As soon as I turned into the drive I had an uneasy feeling about this place. The reception immediately reinforced this view. Then things went from bad to worse. The building and room we were shown to (C3) was truly awful. It was damp and musty, the toilet stank of sewage, a dirty towel awaired us in the bathroom, the furniture was grubby and stained and the rugs were little better and the patio area was utterly depressing.
Having spent two weeks in excellent accommodation in different S.A. resorts I was shocked. I messaged my tour operator and then confronted the hotel management. Having quickly read other TripAdvisor reviews, I certainly concurred with those of a low rating.
However, I have to say the management went out of their way, especially Mr. Speedy to resolve the matter. We were offered a superior sea view room and complimentary wine with our dinner. The second room was so much better that I began to wonder if I was in the same hotel. Hence my rating. The fault lies entirely with the company who own the hotel , to invest in upgrading the poorer rooms and not with the staff. Their service was very good- friendly, helpful and caring. Interestingly, I heard another couple complaining about their room and misrepresentation the next day. This kind of inconsistency should not happen. The food was also of a good stanard too. Once settled into the new room, our stay had a different complexion.

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel, it’s on the beach front at the quieter side of Plettenberg bay. The room was incredibly spacious with 2 balconies. It was very nicely decorated and the bed was really comfortable. However the atmosphere down in the restaurant was honestly quite drab and boring. The background lift music was quite slow and downbeat, making for quite a solemn dinner. There is so much potential for this place, there’s a lovely pool area, it’s wonderfully decorated but it’s just missing a little something. If I tan this hotel I’d be offering picnic baskets, bicycle rental, beach umbrella rental, better TV and some more enjoyable music for breakfast and dinner service. Still a great location with parking that we used as a base for excursions and evenings out. Would highly recommend Barrington’s restaurant, about 5 mins drive away. This is the same company that owns Franschhoek Boutique Hotel, which is amazing. They could take some tips from their sister business for sure!

A fantastic location close to the beach access path and a terrific place to watch the sea life go by. The bed was comfy but as our room was under the main area we were woken by each morning around 5.30am by the noise of the staff above. The food choice was limited but very tasty and well presented. The hospitality was faultless. Checkin and out was seamless and efficient. WiFi connection was excellent.

Room tip: Avoid a downstairs room in the main building.

Unfortunately this was not the place for us. Yes, we were unlucky with the weather and I suspect/hope the room allocated to us but as a hotel that markets itself as 5-star should be able to cope with this. Our room felt cold and slightly damp, like it hadn't been used for a while and when we turned the air con on to warm it up lots of black specs of dirt fell onto the bed. There was no ventilation in the bathroom so we were constantly battling condensation but as it was cold so we were unable to have the windows open.

Breakfast was good with plenty of choice but the one evening meal we had was a little under-whelming when compared to the quality, and cost, that we had experienced in other hotels and restaurants both prior to arriving here and after leaving.

There is no doubt that this hotel is in a prime location and we were lucky to see whales and dolphins whilst eating one morning but there was just something missing. We had been so lucky prior to staying here especially in both Wilderness and Swellendam that our expectations were solid (but definitely not unrealistic nor picky).

Maybe we were just unlucky - that being said the staff did make some excellent restaurant recommendations in the local town and provided a local taxi service to get us there (at our cost - but not excessive).

I would hesitate to recommend - other than for location.
