The petrified Forest National Park is located off Route 40, in fact Route 40 goes right through the park. We drove through but developed a good appreciation on just how beautiful the scenery in the park is. There are plenty of things to do if you have the time, such as hiking trails or exploring the visitors center.

Petrified Forest is easily accessible from I-40. The views of the painted desert and petrified wood are spectacular, absolutely worth a trip. What is also nice is that the park is very linear, you drive from one end to the other and can choose to stop/hike at any or all points along the way. We loved the short hike at Blue Mesa. There are visitor's centers, restrooms, gift shops, gas, and food at both ends.

This year we came with the grand kids, who lost a lot of interest in the trails after about the third one in ninety degree June weather. I found all the informative plaques very interesting as did my wife, but the kids seemed bored by the lack of screen time and actually being out in nature. There are many places to view from the car but we like to get out and explore so be prepared for some hiking. We logged about seven miles in six hours before being cajoled into returning to the motel so the grand kids could swim.

The scenery in the park is amazing. We were disappointed that the Painted Desert Inn was not open due to floor repair. The park is so easy to access that anyone driving on I-40 should make it a priority to stop.

Perhaps this national treasure is not as highly visited as many of the others but it should be. Yes, we were on our way to Grand Canyon, the Utah 5, Glacier NP and others including Banff and Jasper but made it a point to include it in our itinerary. Since Holbrook was not a destination for us, we chose to visit the park pulling our 28 ft Airstream. For all you Rv'ers out there, this is very doable. We were there on a weekday morning in late May as the park opened and started at the south end. There were no problems at all with any parking at either of the visitor centers and, more importantly, at every site and side road throughout the park. This park is so diverse. The change from the petrified logs in the south to the painted desert in the north and everything in between from the Teepees to Newspaper Rocks was quite stunning. Please enjoy.
