We started out on an breathtaking 15 min helicoptor ride with our pilot pointing out highlights and sharing lots of info on glaciers, juneau, etc. We landed in "dog camp" and had the ride of our lives with about 12 dogs pulling us. Our family had 2 different mushers, both Meghan & Zach were terrific - friendly, outgoing, spent so much time answering our questions about how the camp worked etc. Fun facts like their dedication to mountain cleanup with dog waste removed off the hill by helicopter in poop bins. We also learned about breeding, birthing and got to play with 8 week old puppies. Overboots & waterproof jackets provided if needed - dress warm with hats & gloves for the snow. For sure a highlight of our vacation!

Helecoptor ride up the glacier was really cool,
Landed on the glacier right at the dog camp and then met the mushers and the dogs...
very nice young people and super friendly.
Shaynee Traska was our guide and she was great.
Even got to meet some puppies...WOW.
I have trouble walking and the folks were compassionate and helpful.

Our cruise ship called at Juneau for a one day visit and we had booked a helicopter ride up onto Mendenhall Glacier to go dog sledding. We actually booked this trip 6 months ahead.

We were picked up by minibus close to where cruise ships dock and taken on a 15 minute ride to the helicopter base.

There, we were given a safety briefing, kitted out with snow overshoes and asked to store all bags in a secure locker until our return. You are not allowed to take anything with you, except what will fit in a pocket.

It is essential to dress warmly (preferably in layers) because the temperature upon the glacier can be much colder than down at sea level.

We were split into groups of six and taken out to “our” helicopter. This is my first reservation about the process. The choice of who sits where appears to be arbitrary. Two passengers are allocated to the front seats beside the pilot and the other four are crammed into a rear seat, with only the outer two passengers having a window view. Space is extremely limited and I was sitting in one of the middle seats and found it impossible to get my hand into a side pocket to extract a camera for my wife to use (she was, luckily by a window). I attempted to take photos / video through the front window over the heads of the people in front. My wife used her phone instead to take some photos.

The flight up to the glacier was scenic and views of the icefield were spectacular - especially for those by a window. On arrival we had a welcome from one of the guides and then taken in groups of four to our dog sled and the “musher” – in our case a charming young lady called Jules. She introduced us to her team of dogs and explained what would happen.

It was a surprise to discover that the sleds have only 3 seats and that one person is required to stand on the platform at the back and to operate the brake if necessary. The other guy in our group of four initially flatly refused to undertake this task so it was left to me (not a youngster any more) to stand at the back. As I wanted to take video of the trip this became a challenge, with the need to hold on with both hands.

At the half-way stop Jules took photos for us and the other guy was persuaded to have a go on the back platform for the return ride. The ride lasted about 30 minutes, including 2 stops for photos. We followed a well defined track in a figure of eight loop, close to the husky camp.

With hindsight I think it should be made clear at the time of booking that there are only 3 seats on each sled.

When we returned we had the opportunity to handle some 15 days old husky puppies which are encouraged from an early stage to interact with humans.

Photos taken by a company photographer during the ride were offered (at a considerable cost) – no pressure to buy, but of course it’s a nice souvenir. We put it in a folder and haven’t looked at it again…..

The return helicopter ride was a cramped as before, but the scenery was great and we were lucky to see some Alaska bears on the way back.

This was a fun experience and we are glad we tried. Compared to a snowmobile experience (on one person machines) last year in Norway – which lasted for well over an hour in virgin snow high in the mountains - as compared to 30 minutes for the dog sled ride, this was not such good value for money. But you can’t do this in many places and the overall experience was good.

The company – Alaska Icefield Expeditions – is very well organised and their booking procedures, paperwork and communication are excellent.

Our one suggestion would be that the company could offer a premium experience at a higher price – to pay more for a guaranteed window seat in the helicopter (with fewer passengers on board) and the opportunity to have a longer dog sled ride with just two passengers, preferably further away from the camp, in new snow – a more private adventure.

Thank Chris H

THE BEST experience of my trip to Alaska, I highly recommend everyone do this! The helicopter flight to the dog sledding camp went over and around the Meldenhall Glacier before landing on the glacier at the dog camp. This was my first helicopter flight and it was smooth, fun and the views breath-taking.

The noise on landing of the excited dogs barking and keen to get running was amazing. Isaak and his team of dogs provided a truly unforgettable experience and I would love to do it again in a flash!!

Isaak was informative, fun & friendly and you could tell he knows and cares for his dogs well. The dogs were very friendly and the sledding ride was exhilarating as the dogs pulled you at speed across the glacier. The time that he took to allow us to get to know the dogs on the team was much appreciated and holding puppies at the end was lovely, they are beyond cute!
Thank you to Isaak and his dog team.
