While in Costa Rica we did 3 different tours. The hanging bridges, zip lining and the volcano. They were all outstanding! Our guides were very knowledgeable and and made the experiences very enjoyable. Arranging the trips was smooth and easy and we decided to switch things up and they were very accomodating last minute. As for the price, very reasonable when you consider entry fees etc. Plus the roads are in very poor condition as well as narrow and winding. Having an excellent driver was well worth it, and not having to drive ourselves! A couple of items were left off our list of "things to bring" but it was an easy work around. We met others on our tours who had booked thru a different organization in the same resort. They did not have good experiences and as a matter of fact, Santiago from Arenas Travel actually helped them out when the other people were MIA. We highly recommend enjoying their tours.

We used the Arenas Travel office inside of the DoubleTree resort in Costa Rica for multiple excursions while visiting Costa Rica.

Our first interaction was pick-up at the San Jose airport. Although it took them a little while to find us (our flight was a little early), we eventually met-up following a call to their office to connect us. Riccardo, our driver, was very knowledgeable of the area and gave us a great country overview on our scenic drive to the hotel which took about 1 1/2 hours.

We met with Santiago in the Arenas office once we arrived at the DoubleTree to plan our trips. In addition we made arrangements to go to Mass on Sunday in the nearby town of Esparza. Our driver to Mass was awesome, and very friendly dropping us off at church and picking us up after Mass.

We booked tours to Tortuga Island, and Monteverde where we visited the Cloud Forest.

Charlie was our guide to Monteverde, and was very friendly and knew what he was talking about during our hike through Monteverde. We saw a number of different animals (including a pit viper on the trail which is extremely rare to see), and birds (including a Quetzal which is also extremely rare to see). After our hike, we visited the canopy bridges which is a great way to get an overview of the cloud forest. We also visited a local coffee shop where we enjoyed a great snack & saw hummingbirds at the feeders all around the shop. On the way back we stopped at a local restaurant (Mar & Tierra) where we had an excellent lunch with our choice of Tilapia, chicken or pasta. The food was excellent, and the service was outstanding.

Our second excursion was to Tortuga Island for snorkeling. The snorkeling was average with a few fish but not too many during our visit. Tortuga Island was very hot and very crowded (glad we went, but wouldn't go again) but an enjoyable few hours with a great guide and staff. While on the island the staff cooked lunch with our choice of Tilapia or chicken. The chicken was grilled and was outstanding and I understand the fish was excellent as well.

The only negative is the lack of information about the tour requirements from the tour office. For example, you need identification at Monteverde (at least the head of the household does, but not the remainder of the party), and I was fortunate to bring our passports along with me so we didn't have any problems with getting in. I think they need handouts for all the excursions so you are clear as to what you need to bring, and how much money (for example, beach chair rental on Tortuga is $7.00/chair but they do take credit cards).

Everyone on the Arenas staff was excellent, friendly and knowledgeable and were happy to answer any questions regarding the country and culture to make the trip more enjoyable. I would certainly recommend Arenas if you are visiting the DoubleTree in Costa Rica, but be sure you ask about what you need to bring along for the excursions.

Tour people could not have been more helpful or accommodating.
Man in Doubletree Arenas office did not tell us about bringing extra cash for chair rentals or for bathroom use.

Great customer service. Great airport pick up. We had a lot of fun on the tours. I would have chosen differently for the Arenal Volcano and Hot Springs. Most of our day was wasted driving three hours there and three hours back and we didn't even see the Volcano. We loved Tortuga Island! We booked Monteverde but it got canceled and we went somewhere else.

I gave four stars because I feel like we didn't know what we were getting into with one of the trips and wished we knew or we wouldn't have done that one. Also, people seemed to pay different prices for the same activities, which I found weird. We paid for private tours and were told we would get reimbursed if more people joined. I got a whopping $50 back even though the discount should have been for two of the tours for two people. Felt kind of ripped off. But whatever- that's life.

We used Arenas Travel for 3 separate day trips, Santiago was always helpful and accommodating when getting us organized, the buses were clean and on-time and all 3 trips were very good. Special notice to Jihovana who hosted our 3rd trip, she was a wonderful host keeping us entertained and informed.
