“This place was amazing!!!”

If you are looking for a place that is off the grid then this place is for you. One of the most beautiful places I have ever been. We swam under the waterfall, watched parrots fly around us, daily hikes. The owner, Peter, will take you on a tour of the property and bring a photographer to take pictures for you. That was my favorite day on the property. He gives you the history of the place, names of plants, etc. It was very interesting. The tour of the property ends at the waterfall which is absolutely gorgeous. We actually jumped in clothes and all! The birds, the animals and the flowers everywhere you turn is almost overwhelming. The owners have put a lot of work in this place and you can see the love and care they have put into this! Peter drove us into town for our tours and shopping and did not make us feel like you had to rush. They stocked up the icebox and cabinets with all kinds of stuff. One thing I can tell you is, you will not run out of food! There is no way you will ever eat it all. Edward and Clara were our chefs and I encourage you to let them cook for you. The food was excellent with large servings for leftovers later. They lit candles for the evening meals, very romantic (We celebrated our 35th anniversary there). I wish that I knew more Spanish and had an opportunity to really let them know how special they made us feel. Clara came and cleaned every day, turned down the bed and lit more candles. The whole team worked together and they thought of everything to make this a trip we will never forget! Also, Deborah was so helpful when we were trying to organize flights, tours, food etc. Just email her and she usually got right back to you. I wish our family could have gone too, it was just too beautiful to keep it all to ourselves! We loved this place and would go back in a heartbeat. ENJOY! PURA VIDA!!

“The Perfect Place to Get Away from it all!”

We had an amazing stay at Light of Dawn! The beautiful house is located high on the mountain and makes you feel like you are deep in the rainforest. Our favorite part was the walk through the property with the owner. We learned SO much about the incredible amounts of plants and trees, and the work he has done on the property is astonishing. The waterfall was especially beautiful and we had a great time jumping off the rocks into the cool river. The electricity went out for a bit each evening (not for long) but this made dinners all the more romantic by candle light *they provided PLENTY of candles and flash lights. The construction of the house being all screened in on the bottom made it truly feel like you were out with nature, and the sounds of animals at night and birds in the morning was so peaceful. The owners are extremely nice and care about the comfort and experience of each guest visiting. Highly recommend this place if you want to get away from it all and relax in the Costa Rican rainforest!

“an oasis”

We were a group of five adults, visiting Costa Rica for 10 days. The first part of our trip was spent in the Arenal area, then we drove southwest to Quepos, to Light of Dawn. We had great directions and advance communication from Deborah, and met Peter at the Maxi Pail (market) in Quepos. After some food shopping, we followed Peter to LOD. The trip is not long, but it is on a dirt road, so be ready. We arrived at LOD and immediately were happy we had chosen this location. Peter and Deborah were lovely, and the house was a wonderful oasis in the middle of their 200+ acres of rain forest! The house is comfortable, the living area surrounded by screened in porches. The first floor bedroom does have air conditioning, but the two upstairs do not. There are large fans and we actually turned them off during the night, the temperature was cool enough.
Peter gave us his tour the next morning. This is a tour, but so much more….he talks about the birds, the animals, the trees, bushes, flowers, how they have transformed their formerly grazing land by planting tons of native trees and bushes and flowers, and he shared some of their ideas for the future. We had fun getting wet in the pool created by their waterfall, followed by some fun in the river that runs through their property. The next morning, we had a private bird tour (definitely ask Deborah to hook you up with Manuel for this tour) and saw too many gorgeous birds for me to list (including a toucan). Manuel also took us on a private tour of Manuel Antonio park another day, he is a gem.
Deborah and Peter could not have been more helpful. They arranged other tours for us and offered us any fruit that was growing on the property. We all highly recommend LOD to anyone wanting to feel like you are truly in the rain forest while staying in a lovely comfortable home, with easy access to Manuel Antonio park and Quepos.

“Gorgeous - wonderful Family Retreat”
Reviewed 25 January 2016 for a stay in December 2015

Thank you so much Deborah and Peter! What a wonderful vacation.

We were a family of 6 who travelled on the all-inclusive package option. Our children are aged 7 and 9 and we travelled with Grandma and Grandpa as well. Plenty of space for 6 of us in this beautiful rain forest house. Meals were fantastic! Thank you chef!!!

For those travelling with younger children: This property is at the top of a rough, winding road, a solid 30 minute drive from the beach. Bring an anti-emetic if anyone in your group gets motion sickness. You will need a car rental. Make sure it's a good 4 wheel drive. The road is narrow - driving isn't for the faint of heart, especially if you encounter daredevil mountain bikers givin' 'er like we did!

That being said, if you're into a retreat where quite literally it's just your group and the birds, butterflies, and rainforest sounds, the drive is well worth it...we'd wake up in the morning, have coffee on the hammocks while identifying bird sounds, then go for a stroll to one of the three amazing waterfalls on the property. Peter is a phenomenal tour guide - he will point out plants, wildlife and fill you in on the local history.

You'll need a good pair of sandals that you can walk into the water with - Grandpa brought leather ones without a strap over the ankle and those were no good. Thing good solid plastic pair that you can jump into the waterfall pool with as well as walk on dirt paths and slippery rocks.

Bring little nets for the kids! Mine loved collecting tadpoles and frogs (before gently replacing them in the water, naturally).

With little kids you will need to plan some additional activities. The rainforest is phenomenal but the beach calls.... We took surfing lessons and had a blast. Peter arranged it all for us and our full day included two hours of lessons, beach chair and canopy tent rental for the day and boogie boards for the kids for as long as they wanted. They brought us fresh pineapple and took amazing care of us. NOTE: The ocean is warm and lovely but the sun is HOT. Bring surf shirts for the kids to prevent really nasty burns.

We also went on the large catamaran tour. Took grandma snorkling for the first time - the fish were great and wild baby dolphins followed our boat the whole way. The meal was to die for (fresh fish, rice and veg) and drinks were included (including some great virgin coladas for the kids). Well worth it!!!

We flew in to San Jose and Peter and Deborah arranged our transportation to the property. My only complaint of the whole vacation was that there was no air conditioning in the vehicle that picked us up. We arrived from the Interior of British Columbia (very, very Winter) and the transition to Central American heat combined with a 3.5 hour drive without airconditioning after 2 days of travel made us all feel a little ill. We quickly recovered - how can you not when you're in paradise?!

Easy to buy any supplies you need - there is the "Costa Rican Walmart" (seriously. Owned by Walmart.) on the way to the property from the airport.

Pura Vida!!!!

I don't have space to write how amazing LOD is. I was a little worried since it is foreign, but it was totally legit, more beautiful than I could have imagined! The villa was GORGEOUS! The food that was prepared was fun and seriously some of the best I have eaten and I really like food! My husband and I talk frequently about how much we miss it. Pete and Debroah and all of their staff are amazing! I was sad to leave because Pete had become a real friend to us! Edgar the cook was so friendly, funny and just has some SERIOUS talent! The excursions were amazing as well! So fun! I really felt like we got to experience Costa Rica! I loved how at the villa we did get to interact with the staff, but at the same time they were really not there... they respected privacy and so we got to feel like it was just the 2 of us, yet romantic dinners were provided every night. I loved all the candles and just how beautiful the setting was all of the time and really being able to eat breakfast while overlooking the jungle was the coolest thing ever! If I could give more than 5 stars I would! I've already recommended it to everyone I know for a honeymoon or anniversary destination.
