This is an overdue review. I realized that I never completed my review for this All-inclusive hotel in Costa Rica during our vacation in Costa Rica in August 2017 (8/16 - 8/23).
The hotel was about 35-40mn drive for us from the Liberia Airport, where we also rented a car from.

Our experience at the Westin was generally pleasant: weather was warm, humid, but pleasant, with occasional short rains. Beware, there are lots of mosquitoes out and about, so bring your mosquito repellent. Room size was spacious, although it felt a little musty inside, the room was downstairs, and it did not get much sun at all. They have a beautiful garden, lots of trees, and a beautiful lush and green vegetation.

They offer several great amenities on site, water activities, massage, workout rooms, pools, free in-room dining service, etc.. Food was fresh and satisfactory, both from the buffets and restaurants. Most of the staff met our expectations, the drivers were particularly kind, professional, and consistently friendly. The exception to this were certain staff members at the check-in counter, which is ironic, as this is often the first point of contact for guests. Some of them had a little snobby attitude, and seemed to be a little indifferent. One particular male individual, who seemed to have been in a supervisory role sounded a little dismissive, and not very courteous at all. During our check-out, he asked if everything was okay, so, we felt that this was a great opportunity for us to bring up to him our concerns about the several emaciated cats on their property, suggesting for the hotel to take a look at what other hotels "cat cafe" do, as we have stayed at one in the past. "Cat cafe hotel" is pretty much a successful program that establishes a humane and safe cat sanctuary in their property, while keeping control of their population and maintaining their health: i.e.feed them, take care of them, have them neutered and vaccinated, and while these cats can give so much more back, such as pest control around the property, a win-win situation. However, he did not seem interested at all to our feedback. The cats on the property, for many of them, were not a threat to the guests, they were friendly, affectionate, but so skinny. They were a few who appear not well at all and sick. Many of them were very young and were already carrying litters, a bit heartbreaking. The day before our departure, we were on a tour bus/van with other guests staying at the same hotel, and we shared similar feeling, it was a little disheartening for a hotel such as Westin scale that they could be indifferent about the health of the cats on their property. Removing or killing them would not be an optimal solution. One employee shared with us, that periodically, these cats will all disappeared at once, as if someone would come to get them all, but soon or later new ones will appear again, interesting?!

Moreover, the property is definitely well kept, and the dining experience on all the restaurants were exquisite, they exceeded our expectations. It is a gated community, and not once we felt unsafe. Their beach access leads to a beautiful public beach, which have several vendors, massage services, souvenirs, and tour activities, these individual are not related to the hotel, but many of them were decent and fair.

From this hotel, we drove to the Arenal region, a decent drive, about 3 hours with few stops, and we got lost and missed few turns on two occasions. This hotel is tucked in up North of Costa Rica, there is nothing much right immediately outside the property, just a road, and some other properties. They have a few nice boutiques for shopping inside the property.

Will we stay here again? maybe yes, maybe no, as we want to further explore the Central and Southern part of Costa Rica next time.

Room Tip: Rooms in the "10" are about 5min walk to buffet

My boyfriend and I spent nearly a week at the Royal Beach Club, the adults only part of the resort. We absolutely loved it, and were very pleased to have chosen to stay in Beach Club as the pool area was peaceful and relaxing in contrast to the larger pool which was rowdy and great at accommodating families with children if that is your need.

The staff is excellent and genuinely happy to help you. Our concierge Bergen (sp) was readily available and accommodated our every desire. Everyone from the front desk, to servers and bartenders at the restaurants are incredibly friendly and professional.

Our suite was very large, comfortable and well decorated. The room and the entire grounds of the resort are kept very clean. If you are picky you would notice that this is an older resort and may eventually need some updating, but nothing we saw would translate to bothersome or even a deal breaker on staying here again.

The beach is a public beach with local vendors near by. The vendors are not overly aggressive, polite, and friendly so it didn't bother us at all. This is not the type of resort that has servers bring you drinks out to the beach but the swim-up bars at both pools make up for that.

The food was some of the best I've had at an all-inclusive. I would say Catalinas Restaurant was my favorite and would venture to say the food here was excellent. The other restaurants were visited were Faisanella, Las Candelas, Cauri, Catalina and Mitra. My least favorite was Cauri the french themed restaurant, food left something to be desired. Mitra the large buffett we tried for lunch one day and would not recommend it simply because it is open air and therefore persistent birds and flies are difficult to keep away from the food. The hostesses move from restaurant to restaurant on different nights, and ran into Rosaura several times who was such a pleasure to interact with. We ordered a very early breakfast from room service on a day we were leaving the resort on an adventure, the food in the Costa Rican breakfast was delicious and plentiful.

As a gay couple, the Westin staff made us feel welcome and treated us will the respect shown to all of their guests.

Overall, this was an amazing experience and would definitely reccomend for your next trip to Costa Rica.

Room Tip: If you're traveling without children shoot for the Royal beach club

We spent half of our week in Costa Rica in the Arenal area, and half of it at the Westin on the beach. That was the perfect mix of adventure, and just relaxation. The Westin is the place to eat, drink, and relax! The room was beautiful and spacious, and we loved having a large balcony to sit and enjoy the scenery. The grounds are very well landscaped and taken care of. We golfed one day which is a beautiful course and they were very friendly. Pool and bar area is fun and lively. The locals on the beach are a bit pushy, but you just have to ignore them. Plenty of food choices, just book all your restaurants the first day. We would definitely go back! Pura vida!

This is an all inclusive with 2 large pools within walking distance to a beautiful beach. There are always travel carts driving around the large property to get you where you want to go. Every person who worked there made a huge effort to make you feel special. We bought our trip through Costco which provided our transportation from the Liberia airport to the resort (about an hour's drive). I highly recommend Costco's travel arrangements. We booked a junior suite which offers 2 double beds and a very uncomfortable (for sleeping) sofa bed. We had a few issues with our room, but the manager, Erica, took care of it for us. One of our favorite drivers was Evoristo Gonzales who always made a point of finding out what our plans were for the day and just showing up to give us a ride. The only excursion we did was a great catamaran snorkel trip on the Lazy Lizard set up by Eric on the beach. Eric, Jesus and Jeffrey staffed that fun trip...they were wonderful and Jeffrey made a point of showing my granddaughter the joys of snorkeling. If you can swing it, I would recommend the Royal Beach Club at the Westin...no kids, a swim up bar with premium liquor and butler service while you sunbathe. The family pool for regular guests is quite nice too and provides more games and activities. The restaurant at the Royal Beach Club is great! We also like Bamboo restaurant. They will be joining the Marriott Starwood chain in August.

We upgraded to the "Royal Beach Club" section, which was wonderful. Beautiful adults only section with spectacular pool, comfy lounge chairs and plenty of shady areas. The beach was ok but not what I was used to from other resorts. I was not able to get a lounge chair nor were there adequate umbrellas or shade so I chose to stay by the pool despite being a beach person.

Food and service was excellent. The rooms were nice, very good size with everything you need.

I have to say if I went back to Costa Rica I would definitely not stay in a resort, I would go explore the beautiful country.
