Volcano view hotel

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 05 May 2024
I stayed here twice for 3 nights over my 2 different Caravan tours of Costa Rica.

The hotel grounds are really nice with pools and hot tubs and a beautiful view of the Volcano. It is within walking distance to the nearby shops and restaurants.

The room had a fridge which was nice to store water and soda and there was a nice little patio area, I was on the 1st floor both time or balcony.

We had 2 dinners and 3 breakfasts here and the buffets were pretty good. For dinner they grilled different meats on the grill which were excellent. I also liked that they had pancakes for breakfast the only hotel we stayed at that had them so I could get a change of pace.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. I had an issue with the water in the shower one morning and told the front desk and less than 15 minutes later someone showed up to fix it. The staff in the restaurant were friendly.

Great location for transport to Arenal adventures as well as an easy walk to local restaurants and variety stores. Helpful and accommodating staff. Clean, comfortable, if spartan, rooms. Fun pool. Wide variety of breakfast foods. Good bars above the restaurant and by the pool.

Room was spacious and comfortable.
Pool and Jacuzzi area not well maintained, Jacuzzi almost not working.
Customer Service in general very poor and impersonal
We had a dinner included in our package and we have been offered a very limited Menù choice. We didn't like either the dinner and the service. Better to eat outside

I’ll caveat my title by saying I had to request a room move to achieve this as our original (superior) room was side facing overlooking a small copse of trees! So a big thanks to the main man behind reception (apologies, I’ve forgotten your name) for accommodating a room change for the remaining 3 nights of our 4 night trip, overlooking the pool & directly facing the magical volcano. The hotel itself is a little tired in places but it offers a nice pool (with a wet bar) to relax in after all those day hikes & the selection of food at the inclusive breakfast buffet is pretty good on the whole, with an omelette chef on hand. There’s also a rooftop sports bar on site for anyone up for a late night beer (be warned, we found d La Fortuna to close down early of a night & were even refused entry in a bar/restaurant as early as 21.30 !!). What we did like about this hotel is that it’s a little out of the town centre but all the attractions seemed to be on that side of town ie. The Volcano Park, Mistico Hanging Bridges, La Fortuna Waterfall & Eco-Termales Hot Springs (see my other reviews) which meant shorter transfers. Also Uber is available & super cheap in Colones currency so don’t fall for the expensive taxis in USD.

Room tip: Try to get in one of the two main buildings overlooking the pool, on an upper floor, for best views of the Volcano

I recently had a disappointing experience with Hotel Magic Mountain Spa & Conference Center when I had to cancel my reservation due to a last-minute change in travel plans. Despite my genuine reason for cancelation and reaching out to them promptly, they refused to provide a refund. While I understand their policy, I hoped for some flexibility given the circumstances. Unfortunately, their inflexibility left a sour taste in my mouth. Customer service and understanding go a long way in the hospitality industry and unfortunately, this property fell short in this regard. Moving forward, I’ll consider establishments with more understanding policies.

Stayed there for 2 nights. The best things are the soda next door and the pizza place a few doors down. The rooms are ok but we had constant problems with the key pads. The pools are nice and the jacuzzi hot tubs are great. Breakfast was the most chaotic I’ve ever experienced. There is no order to it and the dining room isn’t big enough for the amount of people using it. Staff are inefficient and a lot could be sorted out with a complete systems review. Took 5 asks to get a table cleaned and we gave up asking for coffee. Wonderful views of the volcano

Room tip: Book breakfast time, avoid early if possible
