Villa Hermosa and Villa Toucan were the perfect accommodations for our family while visiting Arenal. As this was our first trip to Costa Rica, we opted for Judah's driver, Mario, to pick us up at the San Jose airport and take us to an excellent rental car agency in La Fortuna where we picked up a 4x4 SUV along with a Costa Rican GPS. After a quick stop at the grocery store, we drove to the property and had no problem finding it using the directions which had previously been sent to us. The roads to the nearby The Springs Resort & Spa are all paved but the final 15 minutes are the typical rough roads of rural Costa Rica. Driving over the bumpy pot-holes was quite an adventure and added to the unique experience we don’t get from our dirt and gravel roads back home. The owner, Judah, lives on site and is an American expat from California who was extremely helpful in recommending and booking activities for us before our arrival. We spent two days at The Springs Resort & Spa where we toured the wildlife preserve, kayaked, soaked in the numerous hot springs and enjoyed a delicious Costa Rican lunch. We also went white water rafting on the Balsa River, rappelled waterfalls, and hiked to La Fortuna Waterfall. We had an amazing guide at the Hanging Bridges Park who showed us bats, a jumping pit viper snake, white-faced monkeys, a two toed sloth, a kite, coati and a crested owl through his telescope. When we ended up having a free day towards the end of our stay, Judah suggested and arranged for us to go on a Chocolate Tour where we learned how chocolate is made and sampled the most delicious chocolates. At the end of every day, we looked forward to going back to Villa Hermosa and relaxing. In the evenings, Judah would check on us to see how our day went and to see if we needed anything. It was so nice having the privacy of the two villas and pool but at the same time having Judah close by in case we needed help. With all of the water activities, we always had wet clothes and it was so helpful to hang them out to dry on the large drying rack that Judah provided on the patio. We enjoyed being able to cook dinner outside using the gas grill and two burners while our sons played pool and darts in the game room or connected with friends on social media through the free Wi-Fi. The lush tropical gardens are absolutely stunning, and we really enjoyed walking the many paths throughout the property. The abundance of wild ginger and heliconia attract a lot of hummingbirds. Surprisingly there were no mosquitoes. Once the sun went down, it was fun searching for the red-eyed tree frogs around the frog pond. In the mornings, we enjoyed drinking our coffee while watching the many varieties of colorful birds eating our fruit scraps on the stone “altar”. We highly recommend this property to families who want to experience Pura Vida!
Very nice place. The property managers were very helpful and were easy to communicate with during out stay. Gardens and property were well maintained. The beds were comfortable and clean. We weren't there a lot as we were out adventuring a lot during the days, but did enjoy the outdoor sitting area at nights before we turned it in for the night. I would recommend having a 4x4 rental as many taxis may not want to go past the Springs Resort where the road gets a little rough.
Just what we needed to recharge our energies. The view of Arenal Volcano was spectacular when the clouds permitted, which was better than I expected for rainy season. We were located very close to the Springs Resort and Spa which offers plenty daytime activities, like horseback, tubing, hot water springs for a decently priced multi-adventure package. There is also the cute little town of la Fortuna that is about 15 to 20 minutes away. My favorite part of staying on this beautiful piece of paradise, was going out at night with provided rechargeable flashlights, to go look for nocturnal animals. We got to see frogs, toads and snakes, out, looking for food. We met Misael - the master that keeps the gardens and paths perfect for sightseeing. If its not raining in the afternoon, another thing that is great to do is yoga on the flat green area where you can appreciate the beautiful colors of the sunset while you revitalize. There is a pool with lounge chairs to enjoy the little bit of sunlight that makes it through the clouds, mid day. When it did rain, I loved sitting on the rocking chairs and looking out for the birds. We left bananas out for them, and many different types (about 7 types) of birds came to eat to that one spot in a matter of a half hour. We saw Humming Birds, Crested Guan, Golden Bellied Fly Catchers, Blue Gray Tanagers, Passerini's Tanager, the Mot Mots, and the 'Yigüirro', which is the National bird. The weather is great, my skin is thankful. I brought bug repellent but didn't even need it Thank you Judah for a great stay!
Perfect for our family!! Pictures online can’t capture the natural beauty of this home. We arrived and received a warm welcome from the hosts who reside onsite in one of the three homes on the property. The rental included a private main home plus a small onsite cottage nestled away on the property within the jungle. Kids loved the cottage and stayed there at night. Included was a beautiful pool which we enjoyed each night. NO MOSQUITOS!!! For real, not a single one and we enjoyed the outdoor kitchen and living areas fully. Very clean 2 plus acre property with its own nature trail through the jungle, made our own night jungle expeditions right on property, very fun!! There is even a covered structure that has a pool table, dart board, and bar next to the parking area on property. Judah the owner was extremely helpful in helping us select and book activities. We went whitewater rafting and used Wave Expeditions as the tour operator...super fun and safe. We also went to the must see Fortuna waterfall. The Mystic hanging bridges were a beautiful easy hike. Judah also recommended the Springs Resort and Spa, WOW, best recommendation ever, over the top beautiful and very close to this property. Judah also recommended a tour of Proyecto Asis, a Costa Rican animal rescue place, we got to feed and see monkeys, Toucans, Macaws etc ..., we all loved it especially the kids. 2.5 hour drive from San Jose, beautiful easy drive, recommend small SUV or better for some dirt roads near property. Judah your the best, thank you for all the help your Home is a treasure which we hope to visit again and again
Great little villa and guesthouse in the surrounding area of La Fortuna Costa Rica rain forest. Judah and his mother were great hosts. Just the right amount of hosting and support. Judah was a great concierge. Helped us with a lot of activities and transportation arrangements. Really appreciated as this was our first time in La Fortuna. Loved the villa and guest house. Outdoor kitchen is fully equipped and comfortable. Comfortable living quarters and arrangements. Large pool for yourself was nice. Beautiful landscaping with lots of native rain forest plants, trees and wildlife.
Would do it again some day!
