Intriguing view of the old buildings in an ultra modern city. Lovely pagoda style buildings and shops. Starbucks really out of place.

The Old Town is Shanghai’s best area for tourist souvenirs at good prices. A large range is available, from scarves and scrolls to embroidery and “antiques”.
Some stores sell according to a pre-stated price and others will quote a price when asked. Always bargain when the vendor gives you a price. I always start at least 80% lower and work up to 40% of the original. If you don’t get a good price, threaten to walk away. The price falls quite significantly after this.
Again, anyone asking you to buy “copy watch, copy t-shirt” is to be ignored. Politely say no and carry on walking.
The Yu Garden is also situated in the Old Town and although I did not visit this year, on my last trip I really enjoyed it. Yu Garden is a must do!
Restaurants are plentiful in the Old Town, ranging from street snacks to luxury dining.
A great atmosphere is to be had in the evening when the Old Town is illuminated in an array of lights!

So much to see. So many people. It's worth it to walk around all the shops and people watch. It's crowded especially if you are on the weekend when the locals are out but fun to watch them partake in their local customs of the street foods and outfits.
