Large Museum spread over two floors gives a comprehensive history of Malacca with many exhibits, models, paintings and photos. Very informative about the Dutch, Portugese and British eras.

If you are short of time, this is of the few museums to visit in Malacca (they are over 20!). Occupying several historic buildings near the entrance of Chinatown, the museum is easily accessible and affordable, as the ticket allows the entrance to 4 other museums (Literature, Democracy, Education, Governor’s). So make sure you are enough time ahead!
The information boards are captivating, even though the English version is often written in italic letters with pictorial background, which makes reading a bit fastidious (bring your spectacles!). Fortunately, you will also see a lot of paintings, scenes with nicely dressed dummies, vehicles etc…Don’t miss the second floor, especially the Admiral Cheng Ho's Gallery ( a museum in Chinatown is fully dedicated to his outstanding destiny…).

The museum occupies most of the Stadthuys buildings and is the prefect place to discover the history of Melaka from its founding until the XX century.
There are plenty of dioramas, weapons, old objects, paintings and reconstructions of the key historical events of the city.
Plenty of odd mannequins everywhere, plenty of explanations and a slightly political use of the space (the Sultanate takes up most of the space, the almost 200 years of Dutch domination have less relevance than the 3 years of Japanese occupation, the special relationship with China has an entire separate boring gallery).
If you have time it is worth a visit but I would not say this is unmissable.

Give yourself plenty of time for this. SO much to see and lots of displays. Well worth the time if you're interested in the history and influence on the area.

Lots to see in the museum about every aspect of history and culture of Melaka. Inexpensive. Not many visitors on a weekday (even though the square outside was bustling).
