This is a bakery, a restaurant and a bar. The bakery's treats are lovely, only offset by sour-faced waiters. The bar I didn't try after what happened at the restaurant - we read many reviews about their beef steak and decided to give it a try. Before the holy cow could appear, we asked for normal water. And we promptly got a jug. That's it. No preamble about serving, no effort even. The placement was statement enough - we were expected to remove the meticulously folded serviette out of the glasses and then pour the water ourselves. Were the waiters plain lazy or were they following the long forgotten British tradition on how to treat the brown man? We let that slide and ordered the beef. And just before I was able to say medium, the waiter interrupts and says no we just cook it all the way through. Err, okay. That's strange for a place that serves beef steak. Well (begun is half) done, we thought and went ahead with the order. We got 4 mini steaks with a generous dollop of bbq sauce, 3 roast potatoes and an assortment of vegetables. Presentation was fair so we dug in. And realized we had been given the wrong tools and asked for a steak knife. No, we don't give steak knives. That did it. We quickly slid, dug and scrabbled our way through and quickly left.

A place that does not know how to serve water, how to cook beef (except well done) and what tools to give for that beef has no place in a lovely friendly place like Darjeeling. Nuf said.

Ambience is very nice and good quality but the cafe service is very sad and bad. Not expecting such low service standards from such a lovely place like Glenary’s.

One of the most famous food lover's point in darjeeling is the glenary's. The ground floor of this restaurant is for the bakery items and the restaurant for the diners are on the top floor. Both have it's separate entrance and also accessible from inside. We had lemon tart, pie and couple of cookies at the bakery on the first day of our visit. We visited at evening, when it the bakery is about to close. Hence the cashier was pretty eager to complete the work and close the counter than listening to our queries. However, when we move to the staff at the counter they were more eager to help us with our choice of food and taking the order. The food was awesome. Also we sit outside, where the view was beautiful. I would recommend to visit this place during day time and sit at the outside tables to enjoy your food and the beautiful view.
We visited this place again on the very next day. This time we went for lunch at the restaurant. The place was not very crowded during day time. Also a section was closed due to maintenance. We have ordered chicken and mushroom soup, fish and chips and cheese Macaroni. The soup was not so great, but the fish and macaroni items were good. The price is also reasonable. The location advantage and the history of the restaurant is it's unique selling points. Also, they have lived upto their reputation for good food.
