Owner description: This historic museum traces the journey of the civil rights advocates of the 1950s and 60s, who changed the course of American history. The struggle for equality for Black Americans is chronicled here, from the Jim Crow laws in the 1800s to the freedom rides, sit-ins and demonstrations of the 1960s.

This takes chronologically through the history of the civil rights movement. It is very movingly done, with well presented exhibits. I was surprised how emotional it made me feel. Highly recommended.

Attended reception held by the Alabama Higher Education Diversity Officers on yesterday evening. What a fantastic venue Birmingham has...... it is approaching 25 years....WOW!...... and it received National Museum status last year. It was a great opportunity to reflect on the past, grasp the current state and fellowship with conference peers. Did I mention this is a Great Venue Birmingham! Happy Veterans Day to all the men and women who served and let’s not forget the families who served with them. Whoooah!

The museum is a must see for children old enough to understand basic history. The film shown at the beginning gives a perfect beginning to the tour. I won't spoil it by going into too much detail but I was teary eyed through much of the tour.

We went to Birmingham to see museums like the Civil Rights Institute and gain a finer appreciation for the battle for civil rights -and we were not disappointed - could go on and on but the bottom line - if you are in Birmingham you must go there!!!!
