This is the worst experience we had in Atacama. Please avoid this terrible hotel at all cost. There staff is unfriendly and arrogant. The owner tried to cheat us. Big travel agencies should not work with them. they overbook and do not respect their deals. I have proof of that and will act accordingly. Please avoid this place. They are rude, disrespectful and dishonest.

First of all, if you can possibly, possibly avoid San Pedro de Atacama, DO IT!! The town only exists because of tourists crossing from/to Chile to Bolivia, but you would never know it from the locals. They treat all tourists with utter disdain and arrogance and the prices that everyone charges, especially hotels, are absolutely laughable. If you MUST go to SPA, I guess you could do worse than staying at Hotel Tambillo, but it is so ridiculously overpriced that I’m practically embarrassed to write this review. First and foremost, check hotels.com for deals on this hotel before you take the walk-in rate. I had found a rate of $58/night for this hotel (about 38,000 CLP) but I didn’t book it because I wanted to see it first. HUGE mistake. The walk-in rate started at 66,000 CLP and I talked her down to 50,000 CLP (about $73 USD) as long as I paid in cash, so I still over-paid by 12,000 CLP or about $18 USD/night. The room is nothing special - okay-sized double room with en suite, no t.v., only had hot water for 2 of 5 showers, and no fan which makes the room very stuffy at night. For perspective, we rented a one-bedroom AirBNB apartment in Santiago Centro with full kitchen, balcony, walking distance to Barrio Lastarria, and Apple TV for half of what we paid at Hotel Tambillo. Sadly, there is no AirBNB in SPA.

Pros:
-bed was pretty comfortable
-daily housekeeping
-beautiful courtyard and outdoor space with fire pits at night
-we didn’t try it but they have a daily 3-course menu special for 7,000 CLP that includes a glass of wine
-theoretically, a buffet breakfast is included (see cons below)

Cons:
-hot water is lacking: 2 of our 5 showers were hot
-WAAAAAYYYY overpriced (about $70 USD/night)
-staff generally ignores guests
-buffet breakfast is supposed to go from 7am-10am but when we left the hotel at 7:20am for our flight out of Santiago there was still no breakfast set up and the receptionist was only just arriving - had to leave hungry and buy breakfast at the airport at ridiculous prices

Overall, for the price I paid I would practically expect the Four Seasons in South America and this place is NOT THAT. Once again, avoid the town of SPA if at all possible. If you MUST stay here, check hotels.com first.

I can be short: it was awful. No hot water, no heating, no chargepoints for the phone, no double bed but regular beds stacked together with one screw (dangerous!). We booked a standard room with double bed, after asking for that again we got a bigger room.

This hotel (hostel) has loud music till 00.00 as they make clear at the reception, but that's fine. But I was really surprised when the music continued this mondaymorning at 02.00.... it turned out to be the staff itself who where making so much noise talking and turning on the music again (really loud). The front door was open all night. It was so freaking cold. We were really happy to leave this place after two cold and restless nights.

An oasis blocks away from the 'center' of San Pedro. Walking distance from Caracoles, the town square, and lots of tour operators and bars.
Andrea at the front is GREAT. Speaks perfect English (with a British accent I teased her). Guy at night can't speak English - but so what? He tries to understand - and is actually quite helpful.
Breakfast is good.
Wifi is, however, abysmal. You need to sit in the lobby to get any reception.

But after walking around San Pedro and seeing a lot of the other 'hostels' - I am glad I picked this.
Highly recommend it.

Room tip: Close to everything.

Hotel Tambillo is situated on a street one block away, parallel to the main touristic street, Caracoles. It is a great location if you want a short walk to the main restaurants, tour agencies and shops without getting lost in the dark down streets that look so similar to each other as they tend to be lined with high adobe walls and gates.

Not much English is spoken by the front staff, who were typically friendly and helpful. I stayed in room 15, which was off of the nice courtyard (bring a flashlight as it is not well lit at night and there are deep steps). It was clean, simple and roomy. There is hot water in the bathroom after a while and it lasts long enough to get the salt and dust off at the end of the day. One downside is that the pipes scream when other rooms use the shower and it was loud enough to wake me up at three in the morning- some tours pick you up at 4:30 am so this is probably a common occurrence.

Breakfast is varied and substantial for Chilean standards- for example, one day I had the chocolate cheesecake breakfast, which consisted of said cake, scrambled egg, cheese, ham, yogurt, fruit, toast and various beverages. Another day I had the waffles breakfast, which included whole grain waffles with dulce de leche and topped with chocolate ice cream, a large roll, fried egg, lentils, ham, and fruit. The hotel sells drinks in the main lobby, and there is a small market next door which sells fresh empanadas. There is a nice restaurant with great cocktails and a memorable atmosphere at the end of the street around the corner, Bendito Desierto.

This hotel is a good value and I was content with the stay overall. It's a smart choice if you want something between hostel accommodations and $200/night hotels.

Room tip: Room 15 opened up directly into the courtyard, and was adjacent to the dorm room, which might be a noise issue if full.
