Thankfully there is lots to do in and around La Serena, because you will really want to minimise time spent in Canto del Mar. I struggled to find any hotels by the beach in La Serena through the internet or guidebooks which I was entirely satisfied with. On arriving at La Serena it was apparent that this was largely due to there being very few such hotels in La Serena - the overwhelming bulk of beachfront properties are private apartment blocks (although I am sure that many of the apartments are available as holiday lets to those in the know). The half dozen or so hotels you will find on the internet are pretty much all there is. In the end I opted for Canto del Mar for its location (nearish to recommended beachfront restaurants such as Tololo Beach but not too far from the centre of town) and the reasonable reviews it has received. The reasonable reviews are not, in my view, justified. Our room was shabby and everything from the carpet, bedding and towels were so old and threadbare (and dirty at least in the case of the carpet) it made me cringe to touch them. I ended up sleeping in my clothes such was my desire to minimise contact with the bedding. There is a long list of issues with this hotel (major and minor) - here it is:

1. Breakfast was very unappetising. Whilst I appreciate Chileans conventionally do not go in for complicated breakfasts and one can perhaps therefore accept the limited selection of ham, sweaty cheese and toast, the food concerned was of the cheapest and poorest quality imaginable. The breakfast juice actually seemed to be orange squash. In the interests of balance, I would say that our fellow Chilean dinners seemed to be perfectly satisfied with breakfast - we, however, did not go back despite it being included in the room rate.

2. Our room (at the northern tip of the hotel) faced a pub/nightclub which, at the weekend, played music at a volume which made sleep virtually impossible. The only advantage to this is that the music drowned out the incredibly noisy bed springs, which creaked and groaned at the slightist movement (including breathing).

3. A couple of hundred dollars stashed in my suitcase went missing at some point during our stay (there was no functioning safe in the room). I do not know how this was lost (it is just possible that I misplaced it) and accordingly I make no suggestion that it was stolen. I note this simply in case others experience a similar unexplained loss.

4. Our key fob was fashioned from a roughly cut piece of chipboard (pictured).

5. The bathroom was mouldy.

6. The area immeditately behind the hotel was, at the time of our stay, a building site with construction vehicles going back and forth during the day time.

There are some positives associated with the Canto del Mar, although they have more to do with the location than the hotel itself. These include the hotel's proximity to the beautiful beach and the availability of ample parking. Overall however, I would suggest avoiding this hotel (certainly for the price we paid - around £70 per night).

If you dont have a car, you will need to call for a cab, 2 miles from the main square and form the mall. Great beach to walk. Dont go in Summer to many people, better in lower season. Room can be updated, Service was ok. The owners are nice. Just ask and they will solve any issue.

My husband and I stayed in the Hotel Canto Del Agua for two nights during a weeklong trip to Chile. The Canto Del Agua is primely situated on beachfront property, and if you get a room with a view the views are great. The included continental breakfast was standard, and the hotel offers a free Wi-Fi internet connection (though the signal is weak anywhere but the tables outside the hotel). For $60 a night, we felt we got our money's worth because of the view and the beachfront location, but the rooms aren't particularly impressive. I would compare them to a U.S. Motel 6. Definitely not luxury, but affordable and great for families looking for a beach vacation at a reasonable price.

One note - I don't know why this hotel is called an "apart" hotel, which typically implies and apartment-type feel with some kitchen services, which this hotel does not include.
