Owner description: This quaint bohemian neighborhood of Rio with colonial buildings and cobblestone streets steep on a hillside overlooking the city is earning the interest of tourists wishing to see an alternate Rio away from the beach scene. Art galleries and restaurants add to the local culture of Santa Teresa.

The tram costs R$20 per person for a ticket which allows you to get on and off at the stops and allows you to travel both directions, both there and back. The track has only 3 stops currently and end at Largo Guilarmaes.

There are a few things to see but it's nothing special and the area is run down in places. It feels safe during the day.

We took a tram from down town centre to the top. Lovely ride up winding road with great views and old villas on either side of the road which were beautiful but in great need of restoration except a few. A few nice looking art and souvenir shops at the end of tram line. Found a great little coffee shop called 'Mo Cafe's. Homemade cakes and quaint decor with very pleasant staff. As the tram had technical problems and was not running down,We had a leisurely stroll down to the famous colourful tiles stairs at the bottom of the hill. Had no issues with safety and loved our morning.

We went to visit this area by taking a bus then climbing the stairs to the to and on to the Para de Ruins where you get and incredible view. We had planned to get the tram down but there is a charge now of 20 rs.
We took a bus back down to the centre and took the metro back to our apartment. Somehow on this journey my husband had his credit cards stolen how we don't know as we kept away from crowds.
