We stayed at the Grand Hyatt. It is right across the street from the beach. The beach never seemed crowded and the kiosks did not pressure us to stop and drink/eat. We felt very safe at all times of the day. Great experience.

I stayed near here. Far better than Copacabana. Well looked after and plenty of bars for drinks along the front. We cycled it one day and it was lovely. I walked along the beach every day I enjoyed it that much

Less crowds, cheaper, whiter sand... What's not to love? I guess the long metro ride from Copacabana isn't very nice, but at least it's easy to get there. There are kiteaurfing schools here.

No beach volleyball... At least not as much as on the main beaches (or somehow I missed it)

Stayed for 4 days nearby and went to the beach everyday. Its one of the nicest in Rio, not that far from the more famous Copacabana/Ipanema beaches.
During the week its really quiet and not many people go there, during weekends it gets more people but it does not really get too crowded as the other places. You also do not get as much vendors offering things while you rest.
You have the typical 'barracas' that rent seats and beach umbrellas to have some shade. They also sell some drinks and food, small things.
Close to there you have a couple of blocks of bars and small shops that sell acai, havaianas and typical brasil stuff.
If you want a quiet and very nice beach experience in Rio, its the place to go.

Barra da Tijuca is a nice and quiet beach close to the most famous beaches from Rio (Like Copabana, Ipanema and Leblon). You can reach there by many transport means in about an hour or less. During weekdays the beach is really quiet and confortable. No sellers around or dangerous people... it's a great place to rest. During weekends it's a little bit more crowdy, anyway, still the best option. It's also really clean.
Maybe you can feel some lack of commodities around, but that's nothing important compared to the benefits.
The little center of the beach has many options to eat, drink or dance... to have fun, during day and night.
As for the sea, it's a little bit strong.. with big waves and many surfers...
