We're from San Diego, so proximity to Rio's beaches were not high on our list. What we wanted was a hotel with charm and local character, and Casa Amarelo was perfect. Rooms on the main floor have 12' ceilings and a combination of old world charm, interesting decor and warm, trendy colors provided by the owner, a designer. We loved the manager, a young multi-lingual French woman who made our stay very welcoming.
It's a small boutique hotel on a cobblestoned street in a safe hillside neighborhood overlooking the downtown. At the bottom of the hill is a bustling restaurant / club district, where we spent an evening listening to live music. Because it's on a steep hill, we took Uber whenever we ventured out, just 2-3 minutes wait and super cheap fares.
We love smaller hotels with local character, and this hotel was our favorite during our 3 weeks in Brazil.More
