We stayed one week at The Cottage with our 6 year old son, having come from a fairly hectic 5 days in Rio seeing all the sights there. The Cottage is surrounded by lush vegetation, enormous granite boulders, and there is a mountain river with plenty of dipping pools and small cascades. We spent a few half days just exploring the grounds, insect and bird spotting, and playing in the river. The accommodation is very clean and tastefully presented. The beds were comfortable, the only noises being the river/waterfalls, and birds. Paraty is a short drive (or you could even catch a bus nearby) where there is an excellent large supermarket on the outskirts and other tourist facilities as it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many of the buildings are from the 17th century when Paraty was the principal Portuguese gold export port. We took a 5 hour boat trip with Paraty Tours and would recommend them. Some of the beaches we saw were idyllic - Trinidade is spectacular, but not recommended for swimming due to heavy seas and boulders. There are plenty of other sandy beaches safe for children to paddle.
Overall, The Cottage was perfect for us as we were able to cover both coast and forest from one location. A big 'Thank You' to the owners, Renata and Colin, for helping to make our trip a successful one.
