Review of Cadillac Ranch

Cadillac Ranch

Attraction details
Owner description: This offbeat roadside attraction features 10 graffiti-covered Cadillacs standing upright in a row, buried nose-first in the ground. The sculpture is the brainchild of Amarillo millionaire Stanley Marsh III, who chose classics dating from 1948 to 1963, the "Golden Age" of the American automobile.

Quirky! Originally conceived in the mid 1970’s, time has made this just the thought of what is was: a collection of Cadillac cars, from 1949-1963, half way buried in the ground, to show the evolution of the fin tails on the cars. Now they are just graffiti metal sticking out of the ground. The metal has been painted so much that it is dripping in some places. Cans of paint are littered all over and the smell of spray paint is overwhelming. It is a very unassuming location and the exit from the I40 freeway wasn’t even marked, you just park on the frontage road.

We stopped here on our Route 66 roadtrip. First off it's a really cool art installation. Great fun and very different. Visitors have added to the site by spray-painting names, pictures and so on - it's amazingly colourful and interesting.

BUT, why on God's green earth can't the lazy tourists take their trash with them when they're done!? What's the matter with people? There are discarded paint spray cans littering the entire site. It's a real shame.

Picture an empty dry or muddy field. You own it and you want a sculpture unlike anyone else's. What do you do?? You find an artist to place a series of old vintage Cadillacs, buried nose down in a row, like a new age stonehenge. Crazy, but it works. We just had to see it. Free admission. It stated not to bring in paint cans, but everyone else but us was armed with spray paint and added to the art installations. The cars are dripping with layer upon layer of paint, which adds to the sculpture itself. Right off the highway, a little walk in and worth the look see. People hawking things at the entry gate.

Very disappointing. Visitors spray paint the cars over and over again until it's hard to tell they are Cadillacs. The garbage surrounding the vehicles detracts from the site. Why can't people clean up after themselves? There are dumpsters at the entrance!! You can see it from the highway and the view from a distance is much better than up close, so keep driving.

Neat concept...yet unbelievable how people treat our planet. First of all NO SIGNAGE? Don’t you think it would be beneficial and interesting for tourists to understand what they are looking at? Just a thought! And no trash cans by the cars? Spray paint cans everywhere! How hard can it be to throw a few trash cans out? Pathetic! Cmon people respect our environment! Don’t waste your time!
