This is a very interesting snapshot of the disjointed history of this country. Its main use was as a garrison during the Japanese occupation.
Many of the original buildings are still there but with a range of uses so they were not open to the public when we visited in January 2017.
Prominence is given to one of the most famous citizens of Manila- Jose Rizal, their national hero.
Late submission of review due to oversight.

I often visit this place because It feels like I'm living in the past. Amazing architectural structures. The place provides a very relaxing ambiance. Perfect for wedding photshoot.

Built during Spanish colonial era, known as the walled city in Manila and served as a garrison during the Japanese occupation. A place full of historic landmarks.

Well done restored Spanish fort used by Japanese and Americans.

The monuments and the fort itself is cool but the dungeons are creepy.

The footsteps of the Filipino hero is also here is spooky but memorable as well.

Great place to visit if you can spare an hour.

My second time here
Enough time between visits to have forgotten most of it, except for Jose Rizal!
The history of this fort,as fascinating as it is, the experience of learning about Jose Rizal has stayed with me since and will stay with me forever.
Interesting small museum devoted to Jose Rizal ( which is free and has restrooms!) Was interesting.
Although some complain about the ruins in this area from both neglect and WW2 I found it added to it's authenticity, after all it's a product of it's own history.
I also found this true of the wall around the city, some stones have been heavily eroded by the elements (recommended wearing good walking shoes)which again I find very authentic.
This area is a peaceful haven full of history surrounded by the madness of manila!
