Interesting place! Avail of their guided tour if you can. It gives a whole new perspective on the church as a heritage site other than its function as a place of worship.

As a tourist, I’m normally not a fan of visiting churches but touring San Sebastian moved me! I appreciate the big goal behind the church’s restoration project: to bring back a sense of community, culture, and identity to the area of Quiapo and Manila as a whole.

The tour guide, Ysabel, is super engaging as she gives you facts about the architecture of the church and explains why the restoration project is a pressing need. It makes you want to support more projects like theirs and then bring your friends to take the tour, too!

If you’re a Filipino, you must have this tour to have a better sense of Manila’s past AND potential. Bring family and friends, then go visit the nearby tourist spots like Quiapo Church, Escolta, and Intramuros.

San Sebastian Church, built in the late 19th century, is the only all steel church in the Philippines. It is Gothic in style and has been declared as a National Historical Landmark in 1973 and a National Cultural Treasure in 2011. Today it is managed by the Augustinian Recollects, who also run a college adjacent to the church.

Visiting San Sebastian Church is like being transported to Europe, with its Gothic architecture and design inside. Its steel columns, pulpit, main altar, and 12-meter high are simply impressive! Outside you'll admire its 32-meter high twin spires.

The place, of course, is not so much a tourist destination as a place of worship. Regular Catholic Masses are celebrated in it, so be sure to observe proper decorum when entering the church. Lately some restoration project was undertaken to save the whole structure (since some parts of it are now being consumed and corroded by rust due to sea breeze coming from nearby Manila Bay). For a while the structure was even included in the watch list of 100 Most Endangered Sites by the World Monuments Fund. Luckily, the restoration project was a success. So the place is now all safe for visit.

Angels brought me there on the day of my birthday... twas Sunday aftie. In my 34 years of existence got amazed with this huge perfectly steel made church. Song of praises echoing like you really inside the temple of heaven. Solemnity is everywhere. To God be the Glory!
