Great boutique hotel

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 02 Aug 2018
We stayed here for six nights and loved every minute. Our room was spacious, our towels and linen changed without asking and bottled water replenished daily. Reception and other staff very friendly, keen to please and answer questions. The breakfast area, which also served as a breakout area, was a delightful haven after a full day of sightseeing. Hotel close to many bus routes and a subway. Quite a walk to the bridge but via the subway only takes about 10 minutes. We enjoyed a wonderful experience in a homely hotel.

We had a pleasant stay for 3 nights. The hotel itself is not a fancy one, with few frills, but overall quiet and located in a fairly central area of Kyoto. The most troublesome issue has already been commented by others, which is the key drop-off rule—if you happen to forget something in your room, you’ll have to go back to reception to get the key, go back to your room, and then drop off the key again. I am pretty sure the staff knows it is an annoying rule, which is why they try to station themselves right outside the elevator doors so you can make a quick dash back into the elevator since the reception is on the 2nd floor and the entrance/exit is on the 1st. It is rather a joke that they are selling the tasseled key chain as a souvenir, since after your stay, you’ll never want to look at one of those again, let alone bring one home as a keepsake. The bed is firm and the pillows are not, so be prepared for some soreness. The free bottled water is replenished daily with housekeeping. Even though they can provide breakfast for 1000 yen if you pre-order it the night before, save yourself the dough and head across the street to Takagi for excellent morning sets. The hotel is close to Shijo and Gojo subway stations and the Hankyu line which can be accessed via a short walk to Shijo/Karasuma which is where all the action is. The reception has maps and good directions to all the sights, so make use of their expertise. The complimentary drink is NON-ALCOHOLIC only, but they will honour the value of the drink towards an alcoholic drink if you are willing to pay the difference, which is around 300 yen.

We stayed for 2 nights in an economy double room. The hotel has nice modern touch and the facility was clean. The hotel is located almost midway between the Kyoto station and the Kawaramachi shopping area, both within walking distance.

Stayed here for 7 nights and it was quite nice for a reasonable price. The rooms were a reasonable size for a three star Japanese hotel but it was very clean and quite well fitted out. The shower was a little awkward but ok once we got the hang of it.

One of the best parts was the nice lobby area. There’s no bar but they let you bring in your own food/drink so you can sit and eat and drink cheaply as there a number of convenience stores that sell alcohol very close by. The staff are also very friendly and helpful.

Hotel location is also very handy to subway stations and walking distance to Kyoto station and major shops. There’s also many very good bars and restaurants within walking distance.

I would be happy to stay here again.

After a month travelling in Japan, we experienced a range of accommodation, never more than 3 stars but generally excellent in terms of clever use of small room, amenities, breakfast. The Itoya staff are lovely: friendly and helpful. The room, however, was very cramped and dark (couldn’t tell what the weather was until we got outside, and while many Japanese hotel rooms have windows facing inwards or to other walls, this one was the worst for us). We had to crawl over the bed to navigate from one side to the bathroom because there was nowhere to put things. Our 2 x 12 kg bags (ie we were NOT travelling with a lot of stuff) could not be accommodated easily and clothing could not be put away so it was constantly piled up on the desk, the chair and spilling on the floor.
Be aware that the only option for breakfast is a choice of 3 cooked Western options, so if you do not want eggs (or maybe toast - I can’t remember if that was an option) then you’ll need to find somewhere else. Not a big choice for breakfasts in the area.
Location is good for transport and trains, but it’s a fairly soulless area.
We had wifi problems but the staff were very apologetic about it.
So, staff are lovely, lobby area very swish, rooms are quite attractive but so impractical for travellers. One night would be fine, but we found it really disheartening to return to for a 4 night stay.

This hotel is located within a short distance of Gojo station and is about a 5 mins walk to the main road that lead to Gion. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance if you’re feeling lazy.

Staff were extremely nice and check in/checkout process was very fast. They serve continental breakfast for 1200 yen (which includes drink), it was a generous portion and delicious.

The room is quite spacious by Japanese standards and very well looked after. Room service was always immaculate.

Only negative is that you have to give them the room key each time you go outside.

I wouldn’t hesitate to come back to this place.
