“A very traditional Japanese experience”

Arashiyama machiya Hanare was our 4th destination in Japan (we stayed in Kyoto for 3 nights and in an Hanare in Koyasan prior to that). The place is located 5 minute walk from the JR station, looks very welcoming and offers a traditional Japanese experience. The living room, a.k.a bedroom looks exactly like on the pictures, with a nice view of the inner garden. The owners are very helpful and offered to apply for us to get the permits to visit royal palace and villa prior to our arrival. We were greeted by Tanaka san and his family and were offered a cup of hot green tea, which came in very handy on a cold day.
A few things that pertain to the room itself that I did not know about at the time of booking, but are worth mentioning: we would have enjoyed our stay a lot more in the warmer time of the year - the house has no heating, and rice-paper walls and windows don't retain any heat. We happened to visit during a cold wave (+5 +8 C at night, about +12+14 during the day), and it felt freezing. There was a heater and AC with heater in the bedroom, so it was no problem there, but the rest of the house, i.e. bathroom, washroom, hallway, other room and kitchen were extremely cold. Kitchen is actually located on the ground (just the concrete floor on the ground), which makes it even cooler. Living room converts into bedroom, but there is no place to store your clothes, so they were also out in the cold.
Bathroom and washroom are separate. However, there was no space in the washroom to either shave or blow-dry your hair, or to properly wash your hands or face - the sink was the size of my boyfriends' palm, and it only supplied cold water. Also there was only one small round mirror (portable, maybe 5 in. in diameter) - no other mirrors in the house. One might say that i have very high expectations from a traditional Japanese house, however, we stayed in a similar place in Koyasan, and it had heaters in every room, was spacious and had proper amenities.
The area itself is pretty, and a walk along the river is very nice. If you are planning to have dinner out - note that most of the restaurants in the area close around 6.30-7p.m., however, the guest house is located only 5 minute walk from JR station, and Kyoto station is only 15 minutes away, so it should not be a problem, plus there is a Fresco store with 10 minute walking distance, which is open till later.
