“A gem!”
Reviewed 9 June 2016 for a stay in March 2016

This was the 3th time that we had the luck to stay in this cozy, gorgeous and immaculate maintained typical japanese house. The owner, Hiroko san, is always very kind and very helpful. She can give loads of information about what's going on and what's to see in Kyoto, our favorite town in Japan. Like the previous 2 times, it was again a unique experience, living like true residents of Kyoto. Every evening coming back after a busy day, we said to eachother: "back home, sweet home!".
We are already dreaming to come for the 4th time to Applehouse!

“Excellent - perfect for exploring the nearby attractions”
Reviewed 11 February 2016 for a stay in December 2015

We were staying at the Apple House the week before Christmas. As the weather was pleasant we were able to explore the neighbourhood on the two bicycles that were provided. There is so much to do in the area that we did not acutally use the train-passes we bought before our arrival in Japan. The house had all the amenities one could dream of. So instead of eating out we decided to do our own cooking, take hot baths in the heatable bath-tube and spend the evenings watching DVDs from the own library. The owner Hiroko was very helpful and there were loads of maps and brochures available too. We especially recommend taking a train trip up to Kumara mountain, walk it over and visit the hot spring afterwards. Once back at the house one should ride the bicycle to the nearest café for some green tea and sweets. We will be back as soon as possible....

“Love it! I want to stay again!”

We love the applehouse! It's taken me far, far too long to write a review about this wonderful little house! We stayed at the end of March 2015 and it was the best experience ever.

Straight from the booking at the beginning, Hiroko was on top of everything and so, so helpful. When we arrived in Kyoto, we gave her a quick call and she was ready waiting at the station to take us to Applehouse. No need to worry for those who only speak English, Hiroko speaks it perfectly. Once we got there, she explained all the things that we needed to do (i.e how everything works and how to separate the recycling). Futon's were ready also.

Applehouse is small, and I would say that families over 4 people may struggle, if your a bit on the larger side. However that's not to say it's a negative thing! What it shows is in fact what a Japanese house is like and if that is what your looking for, away from western styles, this is it. During March, Kyoto was very cold (even snow one morning) so you can feel it when your travelling around Applehouse and when inside. There is a heating system that you can have on in the room which does the job. It would be interesting to see it in the summer months

There are loads of walks around applehouse with a temple and an onsen only 20mins away.

There is a bus service that runs near by and this amazing little tram that take you towards a connecting station that branches out to the rest of Kyoto and Osaka (1.5hr away). We never took the bus but be warned, the tram finishes about 11 (if i can remember right) so if you miss it, you better have a plan. We were lucky on one occasion that they had put an extra service on, one night otherwise we would have had to get a taxi and from past experience, it's not an easy feat if you do not know Japanese.

Another useful tip (and this would apply to anywhere in Japan) if your travelling from another big city to/from applehouse I would arrange 'Black Cat' delivery as it's very hard to carry luggage on public transport. It cost us £25 to send from Shinjuku to Applehouse next day delivery for 2 huge bags. Better than what you get in the UK!! Without Hiroko to take us to and from the property, I think travelling within Kyoto with bags would be hard!

On the day we left, Hiroko took us back into the city to allow us to move on to our next destination. Would I stay at applehouse again...YES!

“Just perfect”
Reviewed 3 September 2015 for a stay in September 2015

This gorgeous little house is just perfect for a stay in Kyoto. Close to bus and train stops and shops, but tucked away in the middle of a very quiet area, we couldn't have asked for more. Hiroko could not have been more helpful, even braving a thunderstorm to collect us from the station and deliver us to the door. There are instructions for everything, which was great as all appliances have no English directions. She also gave us maps, and recommendations for the area, and was on,y ever a phone call or email away.
This was a home away from home, and my only regret is that we couldn't stay longer.
Absolutely recommend Apple House
