Where Fishing meets 5 Star luxury.

What can I say?

Our first visit to Tropic star was magical as we celebrated my wife’s birthday at this 5 star fishing resort. From the time you land in Panama City you are in the hands of the great staff at the Lodge. They take care of every detail with a smile and ease. Ross who handles the land operation is energetic , sincere and truly works hard to make sure you love your journey. Richard runs the fishing side of the business and his captains and mates are first rate. They work very hard to get you to the fish and will take every measure to try and make it a memorable experience. The rooms are well appointed with tremendous views of the seas. We were in 1A and it was memorable. The food and bar staff are fantastic as after a long day on the water you are greeted with a cold towel and cocktail of your choice…Snacks follow which are gourmet. If you love to fish , this is the super bowl of resorts. If you are Luke warm to fishing this is not your type of place. The folks we met are all very much interested in fishing and they are there to hunt down dinosaurs. I know I am missing some of the names of the staff that touched our lives and for that I am sorry but EVERYONE was simply GREAT….. Thank you Five Star for a life’s memorable moments. I am already starting to look at my next trip….

Just two days into our second trip to Tropic Star after our first visit in August 2018. One of us from Pittsburgh (retired tax attorney) 2 from Punta Gorda Florida (veterinarians) and 1 from Augusta Georgia (realtor). Three of us were in the same high school wrestling team 50 years ago in Augusta.

The facilities, food, setting and staff are fantastic.

I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize the booking department, especially Cheyenne Rowe, along with Bonnie Karl and Boris Blanco.

Cheyenne answered all of my numerous questions and set us up for a nice dinner place in Panama City for our return. She was very helpful and friendly through the process! Bonnie was very helpful in the billing and invoicing and in answering a few of the forms on entry and Boris was very helpful this time and in our trip in 2018.

First fishing day was a bit slow but we did get 4 sails and one blue marlin. The crew, Vincente and Jose were very pleasant and never stopped working.

Back on land, Ross, the self proclaimed “man of the land” led a very informative behind the scene tour of the property, including in depth history of Tropic Star and a visit to the boat repair facilities.

Patterson was great in the dining room as was Noel who rescued me when I fell down outside and could not get up till he heard me and helped me. I also just met Richard’s parents visiting from South Africa and told them (as I’m sure they knew) that Richard was doing a great job on the fishing and the entire operations.

We may report back after catching some big ones but I wanted to get these comments in now.

I've wanted to go to Tropic Star for about 10 years and finally pulled the trigger, along with my wife and two of my sons, this spring. After reading reviews, speaking with previous visitors, and talking with staff at the lodge I thought I had a good grasp of what to expect but it absolutely EXCEEDED all of my expectations from the moment we stepped off the plane in Panama city to the day we flew back home. The lodge was amazing, the food was amazing, the people were amazing, and the FISHING WAS AMAZING! If you've questioned taking the family on this trip DO NOT hesitate. The biggest compliment I could give is the attention they gave to my wife and sons. My wife could honestly care less about fishing but anything she or the boys could dream of, or the staff could dream of, was at their fingertips from the time we stepped onto the resort! We loved the conversations with other guests as well as all of the staff and look forward to visiting again soon!

Superb staff training is evident everywhere at Tropic Star. I have fished the world's best resorts and to sum it up, There's Tropic Star and then there's everybody else! Sparkling clean rooms and dining. Gormet dining. Fabulous bill fishing and in shore fishing for exotic species galore. 31' Bertram fleet, Superb Captains and Mates made this the best trip of my life and a "for sure" return destination. They are very well prepared with equipment and are excellent at anticipating your needs and accommodating every request. Everyone can have a pretty website but these people deliver!

We have recently returned from our first long anticipated visit to Tropic Star Lodge. Our minds are still blown. We have had several friends and acquaintances visit and relay us their stories and accounts over the years. Coming in, we had extremely high expectations. Our expectations were not only met, but far surpassed in every aspect from booking, arrival, transfers and stay at the lodge in Pinas Bay. We could not compliment the entire staff and facilities or rave about the overall experience from start to finish enough to truly express our praise. If there was a higher than 5 star option we would choose it. There should indeed be a “Tropic Star” option on Trip Advisor. We will attempt to encapsulate our experience and comment on several key aspects of our trip form planning to return home. If we miss anyone along the way it is not intentional and we apologize in advance. Also this is free form so typos will be encountered. To every staff member we interacted with, we truly thank you and appreciate your attentive dedication and care during our vacation. There were simply to many wonderful people and to many meticulously planned instances to account for them all. Hopefully we are back again soon and can thank you in person. Let’s start at the beginning and work from there.

The booking and reservation process was extremely informative and customized to our interests and requests. Upon booking, we had the most correspondence with Cheyenne Rowe. However, the entire group in reservations and booking were amazing. They helped with airline selection, packing, planning, hotel stays in Panama City and dining recommendations both our 1st and last night’s stays in Panama City. If you are planning a visit be sure to reach out with your preferences and interests. Prior to our departure we received the welcome information, bag tags and pre planning check lists at our home. All items were extremely helpful and made planning much easier as well as reassured us regarding entry to Panama and eventual arrival in the Darian. Upon arriving to Panama City we were met at the gate by our liaison to help us through customs. Our arrival handler was a bit late and apologized profusely. This was about the only miscalculation of the entire trip. After we were met, he breezed us through customs and led us to the lounge where we enjoyed refreshments and waited for our driver. A couple of drinks later we were led to the waiting van and our Driver Isaac. Isaac answered all of our questions about Panama, relayed information and was a pleasure to chat with form Airport to Hotel. We choose Hotel Central, with the help of the reservation team, in the heart of Casco Viejo for our 1st night’s stay.

Isaac picked us up right on time the next morning and took us to the regional airport for an amazing Kodiak flight to the lodge. We arrived with a group of travels and were met immediately by the jungle buggy for a short ride to the river and a waiting Panga boat. We were joined (unknowingly at first) by Richard White, lodge fishing director, in our Panga. It was like getting a tour of the chocolate factory by Willy Wonka. More on that later.

We arrived at the lodge greeted by welcome drinks and chilled towels. After getting a fishing briefing from Richard and a facilities overview from Paula we ordered our boat lunches for the week. The selection and was amazing. The kitchen staff and dinning crew does an amazing job putting together not only amazing food in the restaurant or other on land dining situations, but the boat meals are equally impressive. We were never hungry or unimpressed with a dish or boxed meal.

Fishing… It is beyond amazing. Hard to encapsulate the reality of it. It is all that you would have heard or researched and more. It would most likely be the primary reason people book tropic star and it does not disappoint. We will sum it up by the phrase that we keep telling people now that we are back home… It was like fishing in Jurassic Park. With that said, we will move back to the real stars of Tropic Star, the staff.

It is rare to leave a vacation and be most impressed with the people at the resort, lodge or hotel. That was truly the case for us with Tropic Star. Richard and the fishing team were truly fabulous. Our son learned, questioned, assisted and pestered consistently. He was treated with care, respect and careful attention by all. In his world, Richard, Captain Jackob and 1st Mate Avery are now three of his best buddies.

The land based staff were equally amazing and the true amazement of our trip. We expected great fishing with knowledgeable guides and mates. That expectation was definitely exceeded. But, the on land staff…wow. We would love to go person by person and recognize there amazing contributions to our holiday for everyone individually but we will summarize a few and give an over view the various departments. The food and Patterson’s team were exceptional. Great service, amazing menu options and extreme attention to detail. From morning coffee at the door of our villa to after boating tapas for a starving teenager, you out performed. We expected great fish and seafood. We got a fine dining experience with tons of options in the middle of the Jungle. We were truly impressed. Bar service was on point from start to finish. We were so impressed with Brandom’s skill behind the bar. Not only was he a wonderful bartender but also a great story teller and conversationalist. We even got a local Panama City tour including the Canal from his dad before leaving Panama. Another great experience that added to our overall magnificent trip. The bar staff may be best summed up by our last drink during the sad wait for the boat back to the airport. We were done. Tipping was over. At this point most hospitality situations take a turn for the worst. We sat enjoying our last few sips with Noel at the bar and he thoroughly and with great care helped us plan a wonderful dining and entertainment plan for that evening in Panama City. He diagramed streets, recommended amazing options near our hotel, passed of contact info for friends and was a pleasure till the very end. That was the pervasive spirit of the staff.

The combinations of Paula and Ross as well as Richard and Mallory made the entire trip all that much better. From brilliant dinner conversations at night to casually chatting throughout the property, they were all a pleasure. Paula was so attentive with spa, laundry, room and about anything we needed for comfort or convivence. Such a pleasant caring person. I am not sure what anyone’s actual title really is, nevertheless, if I ever find myself in need of a land based activity expert, Ross is my first and only call. Ross is the Czar or land based activities in the Darian and apparently throughout the Americas. We enjoyed his copious knowledge of Rocky Mountain skiing, optimistically misidentified tropical wildlife, sacrilegious Midwest butter art, cross America’s auto travel, pub crawl dating etiquette and an aversion to aiding in felonies. Whenever I leave this earth, I would like Ross to speak at my funeral. Just speak on whatever. Never mind that you don’t know much about me. People need more Ross stories in their life. Mallory and Richard are the heartbeat of the lodge. Their care and passion is felt everywhere. We are happy that our family got to meet yours and truly hope to visit you in the Jungle again soon. If the Pacific current ever brings any of you toward the States, you can fish from our Boat anytime. Thanks to all! We are sending friends your way and preparing for our next opportunity to visit you again already.
Tight lines!
