Ourselves and another couple had the pleasure to stay at Tropic Star 2/25 – 3/2. This review is two-fold representing feedback from all 4 of us. First covering our Angler experience, followed by highlights from the wives who did not fish. Although the two experiences intertwine, it may help convince a non-Angler to come along.
As a life-time Angler, and like many others we’ve spoken to, this is truly a life-time dream trip spurred by first reading about Tropic Star in a Fishing magazine years ago. Never thought the trip would happen, but we now will make every effort to be one of their 50% return guests.
Staff Experience: Passionate Anglers know fishing is a perpetual cycle of learning…about yourself, species, boats, regions, and tapping into the knowledge and skills of others. Fishing Director, Richard, is extremely knowledgeable of, and is directly involved in ongoing strengthening measures to protect the abundant species specific to this region. He is quick to share his knowledge and encourages same from his guests. In addition, cannot say enough about our Captain and Mate. The Captain of our boat, Scandia, has exceptional knowledge of the hot-spot locations and the types of species found at each. We had an excellent rapport with him and relied heavily on his decades of experience. The crew seemed to naturally fall into their specific tasks each day and worked non-stop. They went out of their way to ensure our fishing experience was memorable, for example taking a freshly tuna catch, chilling it on ice, and serving Sashimi with a dipping sauce. Amazing!
Boats/Equipment: Most the fleet is of an older vintage, but you would never know it. With the staff and infrastructure, they are beautifully maintained and in top-notch condition. The fishing gear is top of the line exceptional. Although most fish are catch and release, those kept for consumption are placed on ice. The Captain and Mate were very skilled in how to use and setup bait fish to remain alive throughout the day. Often we had 5 lines out at times, and not once did they tangle, wrap, or get messed up.
Fishing: We had no expectations of a certain fish to catch. We knew the possibilities, and were thrilled we caught such a variety of species which added to the challenge: Sailfish, Roosterfish (pound per pound puts up the biggest fight) , Cubera Snapper, Amberjack, Crevalle Jack, Rainbow Runner and Tuna. If you approach your trip with an open mind, rather than focusing on a specific reward, you will leave with an extremely gratifying experience. There was no disappointment at all in our fishing experience. We had a couple on that we could not stop before the line broke…. Which we dreamed were potential world record holders…but that is part of it. Rewards come in many different forms from the ones you reel in, to the ones that get away. The protected waters really do make this the Jurassic Park of fishing.
Comments from Non-Fishing Wives: We have traveled extensively, but have never experienced service or friendliness like this before. Our criteria for any vacation is to unwind, unplug and leave with lasting memories. Although we did not fish, we would love to come back. The guest rooms are lovely, roomy, updated and clean. A/C, large bathrooms, plenty of storage. Beds are comfortable…and yes they wash the comforter! We ended each day with a glass of wine on the porch discussing the day’s activities.
The grounds of Tropic Star are beautifully maintained with lush floral/fauna. Unique wildlife, jungle sounds, and pretty walkways. For hours we would enjoy the pretty pool area with outdoor shower, comfortable lounge chairs, a new sectional seating area perfect for reading and chatting. The staff was attentive to provide cold drinks and always with a smile. Aside from the beauty, the relaxed, friendly, casual atmosphere is the backbone to what makes Tropic Star so special.
Non-fishing activities: Each day the staff would ask what we would like to do. On our first day, along with our husbands, we hiked from the lodge up, over and down to Playa Blanca (White beach) which is simply pristine. You can also arrange to go via boat…don’t miss it. Enjoyed this hike each morning to start the day. It was completely safe and doable alone as long as you are relatively fit and have the right shoes (Teva’s worked great). On another morning, Executive staff member, Adrienne and I set out on a kayak trip through the river mangroves. Unforgettable adventure. It was relaxing, secluded, peaceful and a great memory. Adrienne is cautious and knowledgeable of nature. This is the only time I would recommend using bug repellant. Even in the jungle we did not encounter pesky bugs. Lodge also has paddleboards. Helpful hint is to pack minimally. Laundry service is available (my shorts were even ironed). Throw in some hiking shoes if you choose, flip-flops and maybe a pair of nicer sandals if you choose. Another great memory is visiting the local Indians both at their village, and by their coming to the lodge. The baskets are beautiful. If you can find room in your luggage, a really nice gesture is to bring something special for the tribal women who work at the lodge, and the Indian village children. Although we brought dental, school supplies and a few pieces of jewelry; when we return we will instead bring finger-nail polish, more jewelry, hair accessories, nerf balls for the boys, etc.. These are treasures to them!
Cuisine: Hands down the best food experience ever. Discovered the chef and staff work 24/7 to prepare cuisine that is supremely fresh, beautifully presented, and delicious. Most of the staff have been there for decades, which reflects in their professionalism and warmth. The buffet nights were a phenomenal spread of diverse deliciousness and the non-buffet evening meals, served in the Lodge, were a spectacular 4-course meal. The wide variety of breakfast and lunch options will not leave you hungry. And because they have a bakery on premise, breakfast pastries and cookies are a staple. Truly world class.
The details of the Lodge and extent of customer service is too numerous to continue writing about…plus mentioning them all would spoil the element of surprise you will receive. Just know it starts from the time you arrive at the airport to when you leave.
Considerations: Pack light, helpful to know Spanish basics, book a Massage with Marisol, enjoy the jungle and Playa Blanca, visit the office and read their history, purchase a shirt from the gift shop (they also have sunscreen and sunglasses), load up on baskets from the Indians, don’t be on a diet, and be thankful for this beautiful place.
Tropic Star Lodge is truly a World-Class, intriguing fishing lodge. The longevity of their success story is centered around each of the few owners they have had. We chatted with the current owner, Terry, at the arrival airport not knowing who she was. Over the course of our stay, we saw her in action. Her warmth and friendliness spill over to her guests and staff creating a family atmosphere with uncompromised service. With husband, Mike, they have a keen business sense, vision, and impeccable standards to hand-select only the most qualified staff to ensure your trip is memorable….alluring guests back again and again.
