Awesome Fishing Adventure

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 02 Apr 2016
Tropic Star is an adventure. From greeting us in Panama City, to providing a driver to tour the City and getting us to the Lodge itself. OUTSTANDING! The cabin offered to us was clean and offered all comforts of home. The view was incredible. The perk of befriending the local resident McCaw, Ellie, was a huge treat for me! She was my little green shadow from pool to our cabin. However, the Bill Fishing was very spotty due to an El Nino rise up, cooling the waters down. The Yellowfin fishing was awesome! Our Captain was sure to put us on the Tuna if Billfishing was slow. I never laughed so hard as we heaved our Poppers at them hooking up dozens of times. The staff at Tropic Star are warm, friendly, helpful, caring...We had no problem with the language barrier: Everyone understands laughter and humor! The dock staff were SO MUCH FUN!! I can't say enough about the food!! There are no words!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for an unforgettable trip. Terry, Mike... you are doing it RIGHT!!! Patterson: I miss my tea delivery at 5:00am!! Richard, Albert.....EVERYONE! We will be back. Don't change a thing... Give Ellie a kiss for me.

The food was great, the staff was nice, the rooms were ok, but the fishing for me was disappointing. Our captain and mate didn't speak a word of English and we don't speak Spanish, so there was zero interaction with each other. The first day out was rough and we caught a very nice Dorado and a sailfish, then my wife and I both got sick. The only way the crew noticed we were in trouble was when I pointed out we were both sick and would like to fish off the shoreline. The second day, we stayed near the shore and had a great day of fishing. Then we had 3 days of offshore fishing with no bites, no conversation, and no interaction (caught a couple of small dorado on the 4th and last day offshore). They fished the same place with no other boats in sight, and it seemed they had no plan B if things didn't go well. The other boats were catching marlin (38 that week), but we barely even saw one. Go with a group of guys so you can entertain yourself, because our crew didn't so much as say "Hello" all day. The staff was disappointed in our review and suggested a good deal if we would try again, but I got an online ad for the same 20% off so I can't say they tried very hard. Maybe I'll try again some day, but convincing my wife to go back may be another story. The other guests at the lodge had some great stories and wonderful pictures, but it was 4 days of nothing (9 hours a day) for us.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We take your review very seriously and I want to apologize for your disappointment in you and your wife’s fishing experience at our lodge. Your experience falls way below our standards. We are sorry your trip did not meet your expectations. As a family run establishment, we consider each guest part of our extended family and want everyone to thoroughly enjoy their time here. We do acknowledge that there is a language barrier for some of our guests since we hire only local captains. To help with that, we will be re-launching English classes in April for our crews in hopes to increase their communication with our guests and overall fishing experience. If you would like to discuss this matter further, please contact us directly in our USA offices. Both Mark Carlson, Director of Marketing, and Bonnie Karp, our Reservations Manager are familiar with your situation and available to discuss your experience personally. They can be contacted at info@tropicstar.com.

Sincerely,

Adrienne Reeve

This is one of the few places I've been to where they live up to the hype, and quite possibly exceed it. I went the week of Feb 13-20, and everything was exceptional. The pickup in the airport, transfers both ways, the food, the fishing... This place has thought of everything, and they make their guests feel like family.

The accommodations were perfect. Not a four seasons, but we weren't expecting that. We are in the middle of the jungle after all. The rooms were comfortable and clean. The real surprise was the food. It was great. Fresh fish every day, but plenty of other options if that's not your thing. The pool was a welcome treat every day, the drinks were cold and plentiful, and the company was phenomenal. The staff goes so far out of their way to make sure you are having a good time. They really couldn't have been more accommodating.

The fishing was just sick! Albert is the man, and was more than happy to share his knowledge with anyone who wanted to have a conversation. We were lucky enjoy a couple of meals with him and his wife, and couldn't have been more impressed. In the six days of fishing, my buddy and I saw 14 black marlin, hooked 7, and landed 5 of them. We also got two tuna, a mahi, a rooster, two cuberas, and three jacks. It was nothing short of epic. The Bertrams are fishing machines and were perfect for what we were doing.

We were entirely impressed all around by the TSL operation. It was worth every penny, and we can't wait to return to put another beatdown on the fish. Thx again to all who work there. You are what makes that place special.

This was my second trip to the Tropic Star and again did not disappoint. This is is a world class lodge with an impeccable fishery. The service, lodging, and food was beyond expectations. Their fishing mgr, Albert Battoo, has the skills and knowledge to bring world class fish to hand. His knowledge and skills are evidenced in the training of his fishing staff and upkeep of gear and boats. Good job guys!

This was my 50th birthday present and Christmas present from my wife. I have dreamed of going to panama fishing since I was in high school. Number one on my list was Tropic Star Lodge. The lodge exceeded every expectation by leaps and bounds.

The staff in Panama City was amazing. They met us at the gate and escorted us through customs. Which is an amazing way to enter a country. No hassles, no lines, and no worries. The had everything covered.

The next morning we were taken to the airport to fly to the lodge. We met up the rest of the customers heading to the lodge. We were the only two that had never been to Tropic Star. We were the Rookies. I knew we would not be disappointed. The repeat customer raved about the lodge.

We fished 6 days. The marlin fishing was out of this world. We landed marlin everyday. Had multiple opportunities every day! The captains and mates were first class. The worked non stop. My wife and I both caught our first blue marlin. We both landed a 500lb plus blue. We caught dorado and sailfish. Never a dull moment.

The staff at the lodge were so professional. They knew you by name and went out of the way to ensure you had everything! The meals were amazing.

We had such a wonderful time, we have booked a trip over Christmas for 2016!

See you soon TSL!!!
