Tropic Star Lodge/Bucket List

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 17 Apr 2014
Well, it took me about 30 years to get there, and stuffing alot of money into the safe deposit box over a long time, but we finally made it there the first week in March. Getting into the small plane to depart for the lodge with our fellow anglers was a complete thrill. Flying over the various Panamanian islands and then descending into the triple canopy rain forest was like we were in Jurassic Park. We step off the plane and see the native indians watching us we knew we were a long way from home. Pulling into the lodge dock from our canoe ride from the landing strip, it was unbelivable to actually see the Bertram's all lined up at the dock with the crews working to get them ready (this was Saturday, the day they work on the boats and don't fish). Then to step on that long dock that I had looked at for years in pictures and TV shows was surreal. The service was impeccable from the moment we arrived. Within the first two hours it felt like everyone knew our name. Our room was very nice, 2A and 2B I think are the nicest units, kind of bythem selves with a nice porch that overlooks the pool and the dock in the distance. They took our full week's lunch orders on day one which was great, instead of having to do it every night like in Mexico. You have to prepare yourself however, that despite everything you have heard fishing can be slow ! The guys who were leaving the Lodge as we were arriving told us it had been slow. Only 19 blacks the week before. We did end catching Sails, Cubrera Snapper, and best of all, my biggest desire, a 500 pound black that we successfully released. Strongest thing I have ever been on in my life, and I have been on some big fish. Took the right rigger down three times on a live ten pound bonito before the captain throttled up and stuck the hook. The thing was pissed. The captains are extremely aggresive with their boat handling. They immediately started backing down on this thing, and we had her leadered within 30 minutes. Leadered her three times before we got the hook out. The fact that we got her to the boat fast left her in really good shape, as with one swipe of her giant tail she was gone. Probably the best billfish release I have had. Prepare yourself for the Panamanian sun it is brutal. When you are on a big fish like that and standing out on the deck in full sun, you are dying. To give you some idea, the crew whose skin is actually black, wear full sun screen, and have total face masks on. Again it is brutal. The food is very good with the best thing being the fresh fish caught every day. They cooked up one of our dorado and we had it for hor dourves before dinner out at the deck bar. Make sure you are careful when are down there as essentially if you get hurt or are sick you are in big trouble. You are a LONG way from anything. Never the less the place is absolutely spectacular, you feel complete solitude from all of the craziness here. Slept like a baby every single night. Maybe the fishing was not as good as we would have liked, but it was a trip of a lifetime. Definitely will enjoy yourself, the scenery is again like being in Jurassic Park.

Room Tip: 2A or 2B are the best, unless you take the palace on top. The palace is boucou bucks but...

The Tropic Star Lodge was an amazing place. The rooms were nice, and there was a great pool deck with a Ping pong table and Billiards. I stayed for three days at the lodge, and went fishing two days because the third was stormy, and people were becoming ill. In those two excellent days, we caught countless fish of all kinds. We caught Rooster fish, dorado, sailfish, yellow finned tuna, and more. Also at the lodge are very friendly dogs, a black and yellow lab. The labs were very nice, and the day that I didn't go fishing, I went on a great hike from the lodge to a beach. The black lab came with me on the hike! Great place, and an excellent experience.

We spent this Christmas at TSL. We stayed in rooms 1A/1B which have a very nice view of the bay and located close to both the boat launch and main lodge. We had a memorable moment that happened each day while we were fishing to make the trip memorable in a very positive way. We hooked a black marlin the first day out as well as dolphin and sailfish. We caught sailfish and dolphin the next two days. We fished different methods than what I have in the past so the rigging and fishing was great for me. The food was great on both Christmas Eve and Christmas day. The staff were very helpfull and enjoyable to spend time with. Very nice vacation for my wife and sons. We did a hike to White Beach on our first afternoon there and enjoyed walking thru the jungle and swimming in the cool water. We will come here again.

Room tip: Would stay in 1a/1b again due to view and location. Great porch view of the bay and the parrots would fly into the palm trees in front of our room.

TSL was an amazing adventure and a beautiful surrounding.
The staff that met us and took us to our hotel and airport were great and I felt very comfortable.
Our group of 10 caught 3 marlin, 10 sails and numerous Dorado and tuna with some topping 100 lbs. I would say the fishing was well above average but would be even better in January or February.
The staff at the resort as well as the captains and mates were first class and Patterson the manager went way above and beyond to please everyone..
Food was excellent with fresh fish every evening and the rooms were way more than expected that far in the jungle.
Would love to go back and fish inshore as well and spend more than 3 days.
Only reason I didn't give an excellent rating is the boats were very loud with the diesel engines and it was hard to talk with customers. Boats fished very well and fishing equipment was also first class.
Highly recommend for that trip of a lifetime

Room tip: Not a room tip but another tip. we had rain every day but only for a little while. Pack 2 pair of boat type shoes incase one gets wet and light technical long sleeve shirts and shorts are normal wear. Lock your valuables in the safe in your room- you wont need them here

The Tropic Star Lodge exceeded all of my expectations. This is a world class fishing lodge and that's what brings in the customers. You fly into Panama City and spend one night there. You are met at the gate and taken to one of three recommended hotels. Our group stayed at the Sheraton. The next morning we were picked up and delivered to the domestic airport for the flight to Pinas Bay. We were on a 6 man prop plane for the one hour flight. From there it is a 10 minute boat ride to the lodge. The lodge is in the middle of the Darien rainforest. The food was great and the staff very accomodating. Every morning there was a knock at the door at 545 am with coffee. Breakfast was at 6am. We fished everyday from 630am to 3pm. You could go offshore for the marlins and sailfish or inshore for cubera and rooster fish. I caught sailfish and Tuna offshore and Roosterfish and amberjack inshore. one of our group caught a nice marlin too.The captains and deck hands were top notch. Lunch is packed for you daily.(order two sandwiches you will need the fuel) Dinner was nice and festive every night. There was kayaking, hiking, massage, or pool time daily before dinner. I highly recommend this place.

Tropic Star Lodge is an excellent fishing lodge in an amazing location in the Panama jungle. The fishing is the best anywhere-you can expect to catch blue marlin, black marlin, sailfish, dorado, tuna, roosterfish, etc. etc. The captains and mates are all professional and very helpful and patient even with novice anglers. The accomodations are wonderful, the rooms are large with lots of storage space and the a/c works great! The food is delicious and dinners are a nice combination of buffets and plated. If you choose not to fish there are plenty of things to do at the lodge-hike to white beach, kayak, get a massage or swim in the nice pool. The mix of guests is very nice with a lot of couples. The best part of Tropic Star(other than the fishing!) is the wonderful staff, everyone is friendly and very accomodating.
