The Al Basateen Hotel Apartment is located west out of the centre of Sur, opposite the beach.

The place is adequate for one night. The two-bedroom apartment was of a good size with large bedrooms and efficient air conditioning. The furniture was in a poor state. With only a bit of maintenance and investment, this could be four-star establishment.

Cons:

No breakfast facilities
No wheelchair access
Noisy at night – situated on a main road – quiet during the day, busy at night
Commerces on the ground floor (laundries, tea shops, corner shop)
No proper parking – dusty vacant lot on the side
Furniture old and worn
Sparsely furnished; e.g. no bedside cabinet, nor lamp
Bathroom fittings corroded, no shower curtain, pain flaking from the ceiling
Kitchen is poorly equipped

Pros:

Clean
On the beach
Ample car parking
Out of town

Room tip: Get a room at the rear; the view might be poor, but it will be quieter.

A few km out of the centre you have this apartment. We had a 2 room (and 2 bathroom) apartment. Clean, airco and rather weeak wifi (as in many places in Oman).
Friendly reception.
For eating; you have to go out or ask a take away to bring some food. Parking in front of. In the morning, the noise of the mosque.

Extraordinarily friendly staff! Makes you feel welcome and home and is quick with any further reservations, e.g. Turtle watching booking. Comfortable huge apartment with cozy beds. Everything clean and in order. There are coffee places around who also serve food. 1min to the beach although not very appealing for a swim or a lazy beach day. Would definitely go there again!!

TL,DR: Clean. Well priced. No breakfast. WiFi included. 5 minute drive from Sur center. Zaki seems to have a monopoly on all food. Friendly staff.

Family of four adults rented an apartment. It has a central living room which feeds into the master bedroom, the second bedroom the kitchenette and the main bathroom. The master bathroom has its own bathroom.

Place is clean and organized. The only issue was the bathrooms were bizarre. The shower heads seemed like they've been in use since the 90s. Also no shower curtain so you shower next to the toilet and the sink. Not a huge deal, just a bit bizarre. Not sure why they don't want to just add a shower curtain to bring it into the first world...

We never used the kitchenette so no comment on that. But, food was a nightmare. We wanted to get dinner at night and asked the front desk and we came to the conclusion that the restaurant Zaki is paying off the front desk. It seemed to be the only option to eat that wasn't Pakistani spicy. Let me tell you, Zaki restaurant is a review in itself. We ended up eating there because it seemed like we didn't have a choice.

In the morning, you get woken up by a call to prayer. So I was awake and the hotel doesn't have a breakfast, so naturally I asked where we could eat and they told me ... ZAKI. I lost it. It's either they get paid off to advertise Zaki or they really do have a monopoly on the restaurants in Sur. It's a fast food joint that tries really hard to please families.

I'd recommend the hotel, but only if you have to stay Sur.
