This hotel is all about the location on the stark, forbiddingly beautiful Jebel Shams and provides a good base from which to go on day hikes.

Husaak Adventures has an office at the hotel from where you can book experienced local guides to accompany you and lead you on a variety of trails. The trail head for the Balcony Walk on the rim of Oman’s ‘Grand Canyon’ is a 4km drive from the hotel.

The hotel offers a variety of room standards including permanent tents (no ventilation as the tents have no window flaps). The Mountain View Chalets are most likely the nicest rooms on offer as they feature large balconies with wide open views over the mountains.

The Mountain View Chalet is a sparsely decorated, generously proportioned room with all the basics including a small fridge and coffee/tea making station. Adding small lamps on the night tables would be a welcome detail.

The bathroom is modern and includes basic toiletries. The water heater in my room (chalet #1) was not working. Although the staff tried to repair it, I never got more than very tepid water. As it’s chillier in the mountains, a hot shower would’ve been nice. Still, as I was travelling with friends, I was able to use their shower which had plenty of hot water.

I took a look at the Grand Chalet and it’s frankly nothing more than the Mountain View Chalet. The room size and amenities are exactly the same. The only difference is that the outside rock terrace is larger and includes a BBQ pit. The views of the Grand Chalets are not as impressive as those from the Mountain View Chalets.

The hotel has a large dining room with indoor and outdoor seating where meals are served buffet style. Food is tasty but basic.

It seems that most guests stay for one night. We stayed for 2 nights and were surprised to discover when returning from a hike that none of our rooms had been tidied up by housekeeping.

Overall, the Sama Heights Resort is a good enough place to kick up your heels for 2 days, absorb the views, and go on some good hikes.

Room Tip: Mountain View Chalet

The hotel is nice, we stayed for one night. You need a 4WD car to get there as about 10-15km is off road and very steep. We stayed in a chalet and the room was nice, the bed was ok, quality of the food average, there is no internet available. The hotel is very close to the balcony walk and other nice trekking.

The resort has many options to choose from. From a tents, rooms, cottages. It is ideal to explore the grand canyon of Arabia and to do the balcony walk. The rooms are spacious. Thier breakfast and dinner is pretty good but is a tad limited. Don't opt for the lunch menue, it's not worth it.

We stayed here for 2 nights in one of the bungalows. Very clean, spacious and comfortable. I recommend 2 nights as the folks trying to squeeze in a long hike on an overnight stay looked very tired.

They do not let you check in until 2pm when .the money guy starts his shift.

We did the balcony walk the next morning, a 5 hour hike, so we were glad we stayed 2 nights. Staff here are all really friendly Indian guys and the food was really good. We felt really comfortable here and enjoyed our stay. Jebel Shams was a wonderful experience.
