La Pirogue Resort & Spa
Ranked #2 of 18 Hotels in Flic En Flac
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 27 August 2017 via mobile

I was again in Mauritius on business and my choice of accommodation is always in Flic en Flac (I try) even if it means driving up and down to town... evenings make up for it with beautiful views. I usually look for a good deal on Expedia and then double check with the hotel's website. On the website, they announced that the new and improved La pirogue would thrill me with its new refurbished rooms and common areas - renovation being completed by 15 August 2017. Great, booked! I get there and was upgraded to a Sea view rather than garden room. I appreciate that good hotels need to keep up apparences and that construction and maintenance are essential to do so. What makes the difference is how honest one is (I was there from 22-26 August) on the website so as to make an informed consent and how it is managed. In the photos you will see a room with junk all over, this was like that for 3 days. Cardboard boxes and toilet included... a clean construction site would have gone a long way - this is a bucket list destination for many, it needs to be managed with white gloves. I informed management of my discontent and said an update of the schedule should be posted on the website to ensure people know what they are booking - to date that has not been done ( from the looks of it, considering the state of a pavilion next to the pool, there is at least another month of tweaking to complete it all). I was offered a 20 minute massage for my feed back but my schedule did not permit it. I provide not to get something in return but it did show a level of concern on their part. This bring me to the fact that La Pirogue is a "resort and spa" that has NO spa. One needs to go to the hotel next door (connected through a path) (Sugar Beach) to get the services. This pressentes a bit of congestion due to the volume of clientele, I got a facial appointment on the Friday (booked upon check in) but was unable to switch it to Thursday as they had no space - unfortunate the menu of services looked great.

So why a 4*? Because of the venue - it is a lovely space with a fab pool (did not use), beach bar and the Mauritian Hospitality. The staff is exceptional and make the reputation of this hotel - no request is too great and people go out of their way to ensure your stay is an exceptional one. In fact on my last day I went out for dinner and came back to the resort at 21:30 to find out that petrol station close at 20:00!!! In a jam for my next morning flight departure at 05:30 am - the Fantastic Julien went out of his way to find petrol I could buy and had it brought to me at the hotel that very evening at 23:00! Now that is service above and beyond the call of his duty!

On the room, my was great, well maintained and service with a well garnished minibar (snacks and drinks) and a welcome plate of macarons and strawberries dipped in chocolate. The La Pirogue bathroom amenities (shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and body cream) are lovely and smell great. The resort is along a road and at certain points this is a thin strip of land, i would personally avoid garden rooms situated closer to the back of the property as you can see the road and cars and certainly would hear them.

So the conclusion is YES , but wait until sometime in November 2017 and you will have a Fab stay.

Dear 1972Sylvie,

Thank you very much for your candid review of your recent stay at our hotel. Your feedback is extremely valuable to us, as we strive to improve with each and every stay.

We acknowledge having some continuous maintenance work after the re launching and despite conducting these works in a most undisruptive manner, we apologize for the distress this may have caused you.

On the same note, I would like to highlight that La Pirogue and Sugar Beach are sister Resorts and we share our services and facilities including the Cinq Monde Spa.

We really regret to read you could not change your facial appointment due to overbooking at the Spa. If there would have been possibility we would have with pleasure exchanged your appointment.

Nonetheless, we are pleased that the known hospitality of the Resort convinced you of our close attentions to your needs.

Thank you again for your comments. We hope to have the opportunity of welcoming you back soon.

Thanks and Regards,

Andrew Slome

Our friends and us were celebrating our ruby wedding anniversaries at La Pirogue. We had a wonderful week spending our time having fabulous food in lovely surroundings. The beach is literally right outside your door, accommodation was set in well kept quiet gardens and all the staff were very attentive and friendly. Unbeknown to us our families had arranged for us to have a special celebratory meal complete with food prepared especially for us including mouth watering cake. Sadly we only spent a very short time here, could have stayed a lot longer but "reality" determined we returned home. Certainly recommend La Pirogue highly.

We had a wonderful stay at the La Pirogue at the end of May. The beach there is beautiful and for those who prefer the pool, it has a very nice setting, right at the beach. Parts of the a la carte restaurant are sourrounding the pool and the restaurant there is fantastic! We also loved the lush park full of palm trees, that sourround the bungalows. The bungalows in front also offer a view to the nice beach and we found that all of the bungalows were actually located at a nice place, it's always a short way to the beach no matter where the bungalow is, but the ones at the beach are a little bit more spacious.
It didn't get boring, we tryied mini golfing, stand-up paddeling, pedalo riding, snorkeling excursions, the glassboat, gym at sugar beach...
Our 5 year old son also had a great time at the kids club, it's great that it has a lot of shade outside at the playground and the inside also offers everything a child is looking for. The staff was lovely and we knew he was in good hands there.
We actually liked everything about la Pirogue. Right after we left the started some rennovation work, but we simply have no clue what they want to make nicer there?!
We will for sure return to that little paradise.

We had a great stay at La Pirogue in April. Had not been back since 1994. My favourite spot in Mauritius. Service was great. Facilities upgraded and perfect week for the 3 of us.

Enjoyed the spa and access to sister resort Sugar Beach.

We stayed in beach garden villa and slept to sound of sea.

We hired private catamaran for sunset cruise from Black river gorge and had amazing sunset cruise.

Took a private 1 hour flight with Air Mauritius Helicopters around the island...an absolute treat.

I am really glad to learn that the three of you had an enjoyable stay with us and appreciated many of the services we offer.

We greatly appreciate your feedback and looking forward to the pleasure of welcoming you back for another fantastic stay at La Pirogue Resort & Spa.

We stayed here for 2 weeks in October 2016 as the bungalows looked very cute. We were given a newly refurbished room which was perfect, except the toilet was leaking and causing a horrible smell. They sent someone to fix it but the problem persisted for our whole stay. Would find creepy crawlies every now and again in the bathroom hiding under the floor towels but it is a tropical island I guess!

The beach is fantastic, I think probably one of the best in Mauritius. The hotel buffet food is average, we would highly recommend Citronela but you need to book in advanced. The drinks service is also extremely slow, we found that staying by the pool at Sugar Beach was a much nicer experience after having tipped one of the waiters we received a great service for the rest of our stay.
