I was again in Mauritius on business and my choice of accommodation is always in Flic en Flac (I try) even if it means driving up and down to town... evenings make up for it with beautiful views. I usually look for a good deal on Expedia and then double check with the hotel's website. On the website, they announced that the new and improved La pirogue would thrill me with its new refurbished rooms and common areas - renovation being completed by 15 August 2017. Great, booked! I get there and was upgraded to a Sea view rather than garden room. I appreciate that good hotels need to keep up apparences and that construction and maintenance are essential to do so. What makes the difference is how honest one is (I was there from 22-26 August) on the website so as to make an informed consent and how it is managed. In the photos you will see a room with junk all over, this was like that for 3 days. Cardboard boxes and toilet included... a clean construction site would have gone a long way - this is a bucket list destination for many, it needs to be managed with white gloves. I informed management of my discontent and said an update of the schedule should be posted on the website to ensure people know what they are booking - to date that has not been done ( from the looks of it, considering the state of a pavilion next to the pool, there is at least another month of tweaking to complete it all). I was offered a 20 minute massage for my feed back but my schedule did not permit it. I provide not to get something in return but it did show a level of concern on their part. This bring me to the fact that La Pirogue is a "resort and spa" that has NO spa. One needs to go to the hotel next door (connected through a path) (Sugar Beach) to get the services. This pressentes a bit of congestion due to the volume of clientele, I got a facial appointment on the Friday (booked upon check in) but was unable to switch it to Thursday as they had no space - unfortunate the menu of services looked great.
So why a 4*? Because of the venue - it is a lovely space with a fab pool (did not use), beach bar and the Mauritian Hospitality. The staff is exceptional and make the reputation of this hotel - no request is too great and people go out of their way to ensure your stay is an exceptional one. In fact on my last day I went out for dinner and came back to the resort at 21:30 to find out that petrol station close at 20:00!!! In a jam for my next morning flight departure at 05:30 am - the Fantastic Julien went out of his way to find petrol I could buy and had it brought to me at the hotel that very evening at 23:00! Now that is service above and beyond the call of his duty!
On the room, my was great, well maintained and service with a well garnished minibar (snacks and drinks) and a welcome plate of macarons and strawberries dipped in chocolate. The La Pirogue bathroom amenities (shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and body cream) are lovely and smell great. The resort is along a road and at certain points this is a thin strip of land, i would personally avoid garden rooms situated closer to the back of the property as you can see the road and cars and certainly would hear them.
So the conclusion is YES , but wait until sometime in November 2017 and you will have a Fab stay.
