You can have a room if you want with your own private shower and hotsprings-fed tub so you then have a choice of staying in if you don’t feel like going to the public bath for a wash and a soak.
There’s a lovely view across the stream to a little Japanese style hut. And most of the year you gaze peacefully on beautiful greenery covering the trees growing up the hillside. You don’t realize you are so close to a city of almost three million.
Dinner the night I was there included the usual selection of mostly unfamiliar but delicious items - plus not just one but two “cook your own” specialties: shabu shabu (or perhaps it was sukiyaki) on the left and the most tender Kobe or Wagyu steak with accompaniments on the right. You certainly never went to bed hungry.
You also got a feeling of possibly frontier or at least rough-and-ready history when you read in the room instructions that “the following items may not be brought into guest rooms or corridors” including “highly inflammable items like gunpowder” and “Guns or swords which are prohibited by law.”
Also: “Gambling in the guest rooms or corridors and other such immoral behaviour is not permitted.”
A very quiet area.

Imenakiya hot-spring 犬鳴山温泉(いぬなきやまおんせん) is probably the only natural onsen in Osaka Prefecture.
We stayed here for a night to catch our flight in the next morning. I think this is a much better choice than a transit hotel in the Kansai airport area, yes, only if you travel by a car.
The driving to the airport is about forty minutes.
The service, the quality of onsen, and the two meals we booked are at the top notch. Wear traditional Japanese bathrobe (ゆかた) and dine in the room are memorable experiences. Highly recommended.

This spa hotel is perfect for a one night stay. It is located up in the mountains with a splendid view of a river. Be sure that you also book the traditional Japanese cuisine because it definitely a memorable experience.

Upon arrival in the afternoon, spend some time trekking the nearby mountain because the scenery is immensely pleasing. Spare 1 hour before dinner time a go for a spa. It's very relaxing but however was a bit dirty. Then enjoy Japanese cuisine in a kimono.

Also, the friendly hotel staff is happy to pick you up and send you back to the JR station, which is very convenient.

We were looking for a place to stay near Kansai airport but didn't want an airport hotel. Unexpectedly, I found this place. It was was a great surprise to find that 15 minutes from the rail line that goes to the airport, you enter the countryside and go into the mountains. The hotel is a little business-like, but the room (ours was "Fuyo" - beautiful) but the food and service was excellent, and the hot springs was modern with a view of the woods. As a bonus, there was a wonderful, mysterious walk up the "barking dog" mountain just outside the ryokan up and up to a series of shrines.

Room Tip: Fuyo is a room with the full windows on 2 sides.
