Nice to walk and pretty but expected a little more. Nonetheless would recommend to do especially early in the morning. Couple of nice photo spots.

The part of the canal that has restaurants, cafe and shops is rather short. Some of them are interesting in terms of interior design. Quaint, fusion, contemporary. Further down toward the fishing area is of no much interest, but there boats anchor along the side, so walking down with the children is also fun as they are got so excited to see boats upfront since we are city-dwellers. It is a nice walk in the morning where the day is bright no strong sun as yet, so it is enjoyable for our family of 6. This part of the Canal looks romantic but due to numbers of tourist, it appeared to be a bit crowded and messy. There are also rickshaw riders and surprising they are all young hunks and some are very handsome too.

A Romantic canal especially when you come at sunset, This is a must visit place when you come to Hokkaido, although to me the canal is too short. 10 minutes walk from Otaru Station, lots of food around, so you can relax and enjoy the surrounding area.
The most popular food in this area is The Fried Chicken, which is located just across from the canal.

We love the area around Otaru Canal. Good to go on foot to explore the surroundings. Otaru Canal is a nice place for photo taking. The small shops within the area is nice to shop around. The ambience and atmostphere surrounding the area is kind of quaint and romantic for couples to indulge in while taking a stroll. Lots of restaurants and nice food. The one think we missed is the fried chicken, which we read about but eventually did not eat as we were full eating quite a bit of other food. Will go for the fried chicken the next round.
