This was a first stop of four in Africa. The property is beautiful and the staff was exceptional. For us, we wanted to ease into the Africa safari experience and this worked well for us . Obbey One was our guide and was very informative and had incredible instinct on where to find animals we wanted to see. Fishing for Tiger Fish was a great experience for my husband and he spent a lot of time with our guide Easy talking about his life and the culture of the area. The Village visit is very worthwhile if you want to get closer to the people and their daily lives . African Bush Camps has a Foundation that does incredible work and the Zambia project is in it early stages. To miss the visit would be a regret, so if you have time, do it, it was a grounding experience. For us, Thorntree was a nice way to slowly assimilate to Africa and glad we did it first of three camps and the next two were tented and a totally different vibe .

Hi Francesca b,

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay at Thorntree River Lodge. We are honored that you chose us as your first stop on your trip. Thorntree is the perfect way to ease yourself into a trip, as it does not confine you to a set schedule, but rather offers the flexibility to make the absolute best of each day; walking, talking and learning, game driving, bird watching and maybe doing a little bit of nothing at all.
We are thrilled that you enjoyed your time with us and we hope that you will be back again soon.
Until then, take care and very best wishes!
The African Bush Camps Team

We traveled here inbetween Khwai and Somalisa and it proved to be an interesting change of pace from those two. Unlike the tents, these were full fledged luxurious rooms. The rest of the hotel was luxury from head to toe and it did not seem to encourage mingling within the group. When we arrived they offered to take us for a boat ride on the Zambezi river during the sunset which I would strongly advise. The sunset was gorgeous and we got to witness the powerful current of the river. Nearby you can do a walking safari for Rhinos and learn about their hardships in Africa.

Hi Ryan K,

Thank you so much, once again, for taking the time to review your stay with African Bush Camps, this time at Thorntree River Lodge. What a trip! Thorntree is the perfect place for a safari 'pit-stop' - a place to catch your breath and relax after the early morning starts and late nights around the fires while on safari. There is nothing quite like a sunset cruise on the Zambezi- the power and the majesty of the river is awe-inspiring!
We hope that you will join us again for another sundowner cruise soon!
Until then, take care and very best wishes,
The African Bush Camps Team

Our group of four had a wonderful stay at Thorntree Lodge. I regret that it was not warm enough to enjoy the private pool on our balcony. We did enjoy the outside shower! Our room was beautiful; we have never enjoyed a king size bed as big as this. As with the other African Bush Camps, the service is excellent. We did find that staff “scheduled” our days but they were very amenable to changes as we requested. If you are looking for luxury at a location close to Victoria Falls, Thorntree is a good choice.

The Lodge has been open for just over a year (although a previous business, since demolished, existed in the same location). Everything is new, clean, tasteful, and reflecting the beauty of Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park and the Zambezi river. Much more than comfortable, the lodges are luxurious and elegant, with quality fittings and products. The common areas (bar and food area) are spectacular, the food great, the wine selection perfect for the environment, and we were grateful to have a well equipped gym (rather uncommon in safari lodges). While we were blown away by all that, we thought that the true strength of the place lies with its staff. Everyone (management, housekeeping, the shop, restaurant, bar) was professional, kind, good humoured and hospitable. The activities they organized for us (visit to the Falls, river cruise, visit to the rhinos) ran like clock-work and the guides were knowledgeable and good natured. In fact, if I could, I would give the Thorntree River Lodge an extra star for being run by Zambian staff and for the fact that the parent company doesn’t feel the need to put a white face in charge because this would arguably reassure us Western visitors. I wish more lodges did the same, in my view, it is shameful that they don’t. Last but not least, the lodge supports a children’s foundation that is run by the local community. Any donations are much appreciated although there is never any pressure to give; I am only mentioning it in case it is of interest to other visitors. We were genuinely sad to leave Thorntree River Lodge and would happily return.

Room tip: As a family of 4, we were given two interconnecting lodges, both overlooking the Zambezi and of identical luxury standard.

Hi Practised_traveller

Thank you so much for this incredible review of your time spent at Thorntree River Lodge.
The lodge itself is beautiful, it was completely rebuilt with an environmentally-conscious design. Drawing inspiration from local customs and culture, it is a modern contemporary design with tented roof structures to maintain the feel of authentic Africa. My favourite feature is the floating deck at the front. The deck moves with the water level to create the illusion of sailing a boat, and help to achieve a seamless feel between river and land. However, no amount of clever tricks, or trendy design statements, can take away from what really matters: the authentic people on the team. We at African Bush Camps passionately believe that your guides and hosts in Africa are the keys to making your safari the most memorable experience. Our professional guides and the team in camp ensure that through their knowledge and experience, they unravel a wilderness adventure that exceeds your dreams, and that you are hosted in a cultured, informed and charming manner. I will be sure to pass on your kind words to everyone at the lodge.

We hope that you join us again soon for another cocktail on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River!
Until then, take care and our very best wishes,
The Africa Bush Camps Team

Thorntree is a luxury lodge located just outside Livingstone. It is undeniably luxurious, comfortable, and has a great view of the river. The rooms also have a stunning view. The hotel is quite modern, and is built in an African style, but is lacking a little bit of "soul" but that could also be because the lodge is very newly renovated.
