I've visited Victoria Falls six times over the years. It never fails to grab my attention, even when the water volume was the lowest I had ever seen. While you can see a portion of the Falls from the Zambian side, it is like trying to see the American Falls at Niagara Falls from the American side. You have to visit Zimbabwe and view the Falls from inside Victoria Falls NP [relieved of $30 US for the privilege]. The Falls can be appreciated in many different ways, including white water rafting. Viewing the Falls from the air is very worthwhile, especially the micro lite trips which take you much closer to the Falls than a helicopter or small plane.

Victoria Falls Park gives you great access to many viewpoints with excellent views towards the falls, the bridge and the boiling pot.
Bring comfortable shoes, water, sunscreen and of course a camera.
If you're staying at the Royal Livingstone or AVANI hotel, the access is free of charge.
The walk down to the boiling pot is well signposted and not too difficult. Roundtrip takes about 45 minutes.
Be aware of the many baboons roaming the area.
Afterwards check out the souvenir stalls across from the entrance-don't forget to haggle about the price.

We were on the Zambian side and did both the walk to the Devils Pool and a helicopter trip over the falls. Preferred the first.
The flight over is great for the view but you lose the sense of size and power. You can get a day visa for $20 pp to go across to Zimbabwe which had we realised earlier we would have done. Be aware though you need a double entry visa to come back into Zambia if you plan ahead. We had purchased our visa in London before travelling so just had single entry.

Came in dry season which was a mistake, having been a few times before during wet season...however it was still an enjoyable experience. We were met but a guy at the gate who insisted that we have him as a guide. We tried to politely decline after having dogged the annoying market sellers we were reluctant. However we took him up on his offer on agreement that we give him a tip. He was so helpful! Offering us a wealth of knowledge about the history of the falls along the way. You definitely need to go to Livingstone Island to see the falls in a more attractive light if you decide to visit Zambia in October.

Be sure to experience the Falls from both the Zimbabwe side and the Zambian side, as they offer incredibly unique perspectives. If you're on the Zimbabwe side, you get a large landscape view of the falls and a nice walk on top of the ridge in front of them; it's definitely the better side for photographs. From Zambia, you can actually go down to the river as well as get closer to the top of the falls via the walking bridge or Angel's and Devil's pool (if you have the stomach for them). Whatever you do, don't miss out on the various angles of this amazing natural wonder.
