Took an hour by fast ferry (Buquebus) from Buenos Aires. Remember to bring driving license for hiring golf buggies to run around the small town. Otherwise walking is sufficient. Relaxing and interesting day trip. This is a very small old town laid with cobbled stones road. A few museums , a craft centre and restaurants. Full of history.

We spent a day in Colonia, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The old town is fascinating, and the streets cobbled, but it is easy to get around. I liked the church by the square, and the square itself was very nice. There is an element of "tourist trap" in the various shops etc there, but it isn't in your face so you can take or leave it. A bunch of museums are around, so aim for a day trip to Colonia!

Many reasons to go and visit Colonia de Sacramento....it is one of Uruguay's oldest town, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and you breathe history every step you take in the Barrio Historico (and almost every where you go in that lovely town).
Spain, Portugal, UK, they all fought over it !!! it makes for very interesting architecture as each country destroyed what was before and build over it....
The townspeople are very nice, you will enjoy it !!

The Barrio Historico is full of cobbled streets with quaint houses and shops. Lovely walking through the streets and squares and coming across painted carts , old cars with flowers and plants growing out of the boot and roof , painted road.signs and maps and unusual eateries! Lovely atmosphere and can spend ages just wondering around taking everything in!

Taking a walk through the Old Quarter of Colonia del Sacramento is a must and pretty much was the highlight of my tour.
I was able to see the Ceibo - which is the National Flower of Uruguay.
De Portugal Street is another scenic street other than the "Calle de los Suspiros".
It is also worth checking out other typical "Spanish-styled" streets with mini sidewalks. This area also has UNESCO World Heritage Status! I recommend everyone coming to Colonia to visit this area.
