We stayed in Villa Helena 5 on the Terrace Life estate (www.terrace-life.com) on the edge of Gocek for a week in August 2015. We’d booked through tripadvisor and although the booking process was fine, communications from Rahmi were terse to say the least - he sorted out our car hire and that worked well but we weren’t absolutely sure what was going to happen at the airport and how to find the villa and in the end the car hire contact arranged for us to meet Rahmi at the BP petrol station. This worked out but there were a few tense minutes waiting for somebody to turn up.
It’s a great shame Rahmi didn’t tell us more about the villa because it’s really well equipped and we would have felt much more relaxed and informed about the holiday. It’s a great house, full of new Ikea furnishings and even the same cutlery as at home. There are three super double bedrooms, one with en suite, and two bathrooms. There’s a big living area and well equipped kitchen. There’s even a set of boxes full of first aid gear, sewing materials, games, and so on. There’s a decent flat screen TV with HDMI inputs if you have connectors and a Bose iPod dock. We forgot to bring an audio cable for plugging our non-Apple gear in to this but it’ll take a standard 2.5mm jack.
We’d also asked before we came about the Terrace Life complex but hadn’t had any information back. We didn’t actually use any facilities but did notice that one of the pools - what looks like a really nice kids’ play pool with a mock sailing ship in the middle - had no water in it. We might have brought tennis balls if we’d known there was a tennis court - there were racquets in a cupboard in the villa.
A good pool was really important for us and this one was ideal. It’s a good size, very well maintained, and has lovely irridescent mosaic tiles which shimmer and shine in the sunshine. You’re overlooking the bay and mountains and the view is lovely, with flowering bougainvillea and other plants round the property. We were fortunate that we had nobody in the neighbouring villas while we were there - in fact the estate was very quiet and one of the neighbouring villas had an empty pool. We spent lots of time by the pool on the excellent sunbeds. You’re not provided with beach towels but there are plenty of other towels and we picked up some cheap beach towels from Tesco in Gocek for about £2.50 each.
It is worth saying that you’re overlooking the D400 main road too - not close, but close enough for road noise to be present pretty constantly. We hadn’t expected that and if you never went to the beaches or other attractions it could be tiresome.
One minor detraction was the intermittent nature of the WiFi. At times it was great - I could download a couple of videos I’d forgotten from my home media server - but for some of the time it was either non-existent or so poor as to be a time-sapping frustration. I texted Rahmi to ask for his help and didn’t get a reply by text - when I did get some internet at a restaurant I sent him another message, then in the end the following night got a reply saying he had restarted the router. It would have been nice to get a text back saying he was looking at it.
All in all we had a great time here and the villa is a delightful property in a relaxing location (Gocek is an easy-going place to be) but with one or two minor issues with Villa Helena 5. Some would be easy to fix- just sending us an up-front document telling us all about the property, how to get here, when to meet, etc - but others such as the road noise aren’t.
If you do come I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful holiday - we certainly have. And if you do come, you’ll find the estate directly opposite the BP garage on the north side of the D400 (the other side to the town), on a gravel road that runs past the fire station. Don’t go in the main terrace life gates but go up the side to the sliding gate, and Helena 5 is about 50m up on the left once you’re inside. Reverse into the drive.
And finally if you do come, the boat trip on SS Serdar was wonderful and basically a free boat trip for the price of a meal, the beaches and sea are lovely, and the people have all had decent English and been very welcoming and helpful.
