Owner description: Among the most spectacular in Turkey, the site has remarkable remains from the Roman and Byzantine periods.

Most of the ruins at the site correspond to the Hellenistic period like the theater for example from 3rd c. BC with a capacity of 10.000 spectators. Another interesting spot is the temple of Trajan, the only Roman ruin at the site. It was erected to honor the Emperor Trajan and completed by Emperor Hadrian after Trajan's death. From the Acropolis you can also see the Asklepieion, the famous ancient medical center.

Impressive archaeological site located on the top of a hill. Ruins include Altar of Zeus & Hellenistic theatre. The 360 view of the city & landscape is definitely worth the visit.

As you walk in you get to see how well spotted the Palace was with 360 views for miles. The ruins sadly are mostly piles of old stone but the layout can be seen, and its worth the uphill hike. It gets a bit windy as you would expect as you are on top of a mountain.

There is a café just before you buy a ticket sadly there are people sitting there trying to get you to visit their shop which can be a little trying.

It was a 3 hour drive from Kusadasi and you'll spend a good 3 or 4 hours exploring the site, so it was a long day, but sooo rewarding. It looks like most tourists don't want to make the effort, because we were virtually the only people there on the day, which made a lovely change after visiting Ephesus.
Starting on the top, the Acropolis is awesome. From there you descend to see the enormous theater, which seems to precariously hang onto the side of the mountain. Unfortunately, only the foundations are left of the Temple of Athena. Our guide kept telling us that all the best pieces were taken and are now on display in Germany, in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. Maybe it's time to return some and restore the site to its original glory ?

After dealing with the crowds at Ephesus, Pergamum is a breath of fresh air. The location is spectacular, high above the nearby villages. You can drive up to the acropolis, or take a cable car (10 lira). I think the site entrance fee is 40 lira. While nowhere near as large as Ephesus, the site has a better "feel" to it - you can better appreciate what life might have been like there over 2000 years ago.
After visiting Pergamum, treat yourself to a visit to the village of Sirence - only a few miles away. Lots of shops and local wines to try!
